Lab Specialist Senior

The Department of Cell Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Lab Specialist Senior to work in Dr. Elias Spiliotis's laboratory (spiliotislab.org). Lab Specialist Senior employees assist in the administration and coordination of technical activities of the research lab, including the management of lab projects, staff and budgets. They act as specialists on designing research methodologies, establishing quality standards and performance metrics, and analyzing data. They ensure that standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. They may co-author publications and co-present results with the PI.

Job Duties

• Specialize in lab research methods and equipment functions with a focus on purification of recombinant proteins using fast performance liquid chromatography (FPLC), and development of in vitro reconstitution assays for projects of the Spiliotis lab.

• Develop, design and conduct one or more small or moderately complex experiments in accordance to a plan as formulated with Dr. Spiliotis.

• Act independently in the design of research projects and development of protocols in consultation with Dr. Spiliotis.

• Conduct analyses of data and interpret and implement research methodology and experimentation based on outcomes of analyses.

• Supervise, train and assist lab members in lab techniques and procedures.

• Oversee day-to-day operations of lab projects and operations including the administration and upkeep of lab supply budgets.

• Assist in formulating short and long term goals for the operation of the lab.

• Manage and coordinate operational procedures and policies of the lab.

• May develop lab procedures and policies.

• May act as a liaison to other labs and research projects.

• Participate in the writing of grant research proposals and publications, and presentation of data at research conferences.

• Participate in lab meetings.

• In addition to the above responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 6 years of experience. 10 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree or Master's degree plus 4 years lab-related experience.

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
