Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences at Northwestern University is seeking an Assistant Dean for Academic Advising to join the College's Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising (OUSA). This position is open to candidates with a terminal degree in an Arts & Sciences discipline and requires teaching one undergraduate course per year as a member of the teaching-track faculty. Applications by continuing faculty members are welcome. This appointment will be term-limited, with an option for renewal upon review. This is an 11-month, full-time appointment.

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Academic Advising (ADAA) leads the Weinberg College Advising Office, ensuring that the office runs effectively and transparently in fulfilling its central mission of providing general academic advising to Weinberg students. The office comprises 22 (as of Fall 2025) full-time advisers, all with faculty appointments in Weinberg departments and programs. The Assistant Dean ensures that all Weinberg students receive excellent academic support, represents the needs of Weinberg students within the College and across the University, manages complex cases, and provides strategic leadership for the Advising Office.

The ideal candidate will have at least 8 years of academic advising experience in a university setting. They should bring to the position an understanding of student development, expertise in having difficult but supportive conversations with students, and a demonstrated ability to develop supportive action plans to connect students with academic programs and resources. Candidates should have a deep understanding of how to problem-solve with students within University policies. The position will require a high degree of collaboration with students, faculty, and staff across Weinberg College and the other undergraduate schools at Northwestern, as well as University-wide student support resources. As a member of the Associate Dean's senior staff and as a leader of the Advising Office, the Assistant Dean must be a strategic thinker and collaborative leader. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or terminal degree in an academic field represented in the College's curriculum. They will teach one class per academic year.

Primary responsibilities will include the following: Meet with students with acute needs, acting as an academic case manager to provide short-term support during difficult periods Consult with advisers, other OUSA colleagues on student-related issues to advocate for students and ensure high-quality advising. Work with faculty with student concerns to resolve issues Represent Advising Office and Weinberg students at Undergraduate Council and Undergraduate Updates meetings; provide relevant updates from these meetings to OUSA senior staff Collaborate with the leadership in OUSA on strategic matters to do with undergraduate students education and support Manage requests for flexibility (illness, emergencies, etc) and midterm feedback Serve on academic standing committee (helping to make probation and dismissal decisions) and OUSA senior staff (representing concerns of advisers to OUSA leadership) Provide input for Director of Academic Advising on personnel matters

Salary

The base pay range for this position is $105,000-$115,000. This base pay range is for an eleven-month academic appointment, and does not include summer salary.

The salary offered to the selected candidate is determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal comparators; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
