The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Minimum Qualifications |

Preferred Qualifications |
- Training and/or experience in quality management and/or safety management or closely related areas
- Hands-on work experience in medical, veterinary, or comparable laboratory settings at best under QM-accredited conditions
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with the team
- Outstanding attention to detail
- Willingness to cross-train for additional laboratory procedures as needed |
Position Summary |
This position will serve as the Quality Manager and Safety Officer for the Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a full service veterinary diagnostic laboratory accredited with the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (
AAVLD). Coordination and implementation of the quality system. Oversee safety protocols and procedures. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Quality standards: In-depth knowledge and understanding of the current version of AAVLD Requirements for an Accredited Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory.
- Computer software: laboratory management (VetView), quality management (Omni-Asstant), Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat; an aptitude to quickly learn new computer software.
- Organizational skills: Proven ability to plan/prioritize tasks and function independently in a sequential and logical manner.
- Inter-personal skills: Ability to routinely and positively interact with technical and professional staff in all sections of the laboratory, TVDIL clients, QA Manager at the Athens Lab, and external auditors and colleagues from other diagnostic laboratories.
- Customer service: Clear understanding of business management principles and how to serve both internal and external customers in a quality management system.
- Technical laboratory knowledge and skills: Have a general working understanding of veterinary laboratory diagnostic techniques, bio-safety and bio-security principles, and mastery of general biological procedures.
- Communication skills: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to develop, write and edit various types of quality system documents.

Quality Manager core duties:
- Maintain quality system including both quality assessment (QA) and quality control (QC) processes such as internal audits
- Work with the whole TVDIL team to maintain and improve work quality under current accreditation standards, including development and implementation of a training program for quality management at the TVDIL\
- Close collaboration with the administrative team and lab director to prepare for and respond to regular reaccreditation audits to maintain accreditation status

Laboratory Safety Manager core duties:
- In coordination with the TVDIL director and other team members, maintain and improve safety policies and plans, such as developing and disseminating emergency plans for fire or inclement weather events, biosafety and biosecurity issues
- Coordinate with UGA offices for various safety inspections and respond to findings (e.g., environmental safety, biosafety, BSL-3 annual performance review), perform regular in-house safety inspections, participate in safety committees of College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the UGA Tifton campus
- Coordinate and oversee UGA safety standard maintenance, including organization of safety trainings, hazardous waste management, PPE and safety signage selection and use, and other safety-related tasks such as employee vaccination status review (in coordination e.g., with the Tift County Health Department)
