Your Role on the Team
The HR Generalist is the first point of contact for a client group, ensuring that the University's most important asset - our people - are being supported and developed. With little to no direction, the HR Generalist collaborates with their client group leaders and staff to implement UC policies, University procedures and programs, and unit guidelines consistently to foster a positive work environment with effective communication and change management techniques. This position reports directly to the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) for University Advancement & Alumni Relations.
The incumbent will utilize HR data to make a wide variety of recommendations. The HR Generalist is responsible for advising management and staff on all HR departmental issues, interpreting HR policies, programs, and procedures, understanding which issues require referrals to centers of excellence (COE), establishing effective working relationships with contacts in the COE and acting as a liaison to those resources when necessary.
The HR Generalist is a seasoned, experienced professional who will understand how to apply organization policies and procedures to resolve the full range of HR-related issues in support of their client groups. These issues may include talent acquisition, organizational development and effectiveness, employee and labor relations, total rewards, and diversity, equity and inclusion programs and are generally complex in scope where analysis of situations require a review of a variety of factors. The incumbent must have enough knowledge of UC policy and UCI procedures or experience working in a large, matrix-style organization to understand when referrals to the COE are necessary and when the work remains within the unit with minimal guidance.

Required:
- Possesses strong analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
- Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, knowledge of functional area and understands how work may affect other areas.
- Thorough knowledge of human resources concepts, policies and procedures, employment practices, labor relations, salary administration, training and other areas of human resources.
- Knowledge of a human resources management system (HRMS), and / or other related business software programs and systems.
- Skilled in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to handle very difficult or volatile situations / individuals effectively.
- Demonstrated analytical, active listening, and critical thinking skills.
- Adaptability to work independently as well as collaboratively with Advancement and UCI faculty and staff to achieve defined goals. Use initiative to organize and follow through with complex tasks to meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of where to go within the organization for needed information and ability to judge what information should be passed on to different levels of management.
- Strong customer service orientation. Ability to provide customer service to a diverse and high-level staff in a diplomatic and confidential manner.
- Analytical skills to determine information relevant to a problem, and to determine issues of concern for Human Resources and Leadership.
- Ability to be flexible in working independently as well as collaboratively with University Advancement, Centers of Excellence (COE), faculty and staff to achieve defined goals.
- Three years of experience as an HR Generalist
- Three years of experience performing full-cycle recruitments and advising senior leadership on interview questions and interviewing techniques
Preferred:
- Knowledge of UCI Systems, such as applicant tracking systems (ATS), TRS, UC Path, JDX, and Salesforce or similar CRM.
- Knowledge of Organizational Development and Effectiveness programs / techniques including: succession planning and organizational change management (OCM)
- Knowledge of Organizational Development and Effectiveness programs / techniques including: succession planning and organizational change management (OCM)
- Knowledge of UCI Systems, such as applicant tracking systems (ATS), TRS, UC Path, JDX, and Salesforce or similar CRM.
- Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
- Broad knowledge of UC Path and UC payroll guidelines.
- Experience developing and implementing training programs.
