About the College/Unit/Department |
Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.
In support of its mission to provide comfortable, affordable and secure housing options where the academic success and personal growth of residents are encouraged and supported, University Housing engages staff members in competency-based training and students in curriculum-based engagement focused on community building, interpersonal skills, social awareness and responsibility, and well-being. |

- 3-5 years full-time work experience in housing and residence life or related field

- Experience with residential academic initiatives at the university level (i.e., residential colleges, living learning communities, themed housing, etc.)

Position Summary |
The primary function of the Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives and Student Leadership is to shape the educational experience for more than 9,000 students living in University Housing. This includes developing and enhancing academic initiatives, fostering relationships with academic partners, and fostering educational and leadership programs for residential students. The assistant director will serve as a member of the unit's leadership team and contribute significantly to the creation, implementation and on-going assessment of University Housing's curricular approach to residential learning and provide oversight to residential student leadership initiatives. This position supervises both full-time staff and graduate assistants, and reports to the Associate Director of Residential Programs and Services. |

- Collaborative skills to work with faculty and staff from a variety of university departments
- Ability to multitask and find creative solutions in a supervisory and autonomous environment
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office programs and Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard
- Strong oral and written communication skills needed to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and administrators

Academic Initiatives and Student Leadership
- Lead the Residential Programs and Services team in the implementation of University Housing's residential curriculum with the associate director for residential programs and services.
- Create, implement and assess annual and on-going training programs for staff focused on University Housing's academic initiatives and residential curriculum.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance faculty involvement in the residence halls.
- Serve as a liaison to academic colleges, departments and support services; which includes coordinating the MOU process for each partnership.
- Work collaboratively with university partners to create new and implement the 7 currently established living learning communities.
- Serve as the liaison between academic partners and University Housing's assignments and marketing staff to develop timelines for the recruitment and placement of students interested in participating in living learning communities.
- Provide oversight to University Housing's student leadership initiatives through supervision and on-going engagement with the residential leadership coordinator and graduate assistant for student leadership.
- Provide oversight to University Housing's belonging initiatives through supervision and on-going engagement with the coordinator for residential education and belonging and residential belonging assistants.
- Develop and implement annual and on-going assessments for academic initiatives, residential curriculum and student leadership initiatives.

- Select, train, supervise and evaluate the residential leadership coordinator, a graduate assistant for residential curriculum and the graduate assistant for academic initiatives.
- Select, train, supervise and evaluate the coordinator for residential education and belonging, and indirectly supervise the twelve residential belonging assistants that report to the coordinator for residential education and belonging.
- Support in supervision of all live-in residence hall directors and graduate residents in their implementation of residential curriculum, academic initiatives, and student leadership in community.
- Participate in unit and departmental recruitment, selection and training activities.
- Actively engage in the development, engagement & retention of each staff member.
- Work with staff to develop unit and area goals that contribute to the achievement of departmental, divisional and university priorities.

- Provide follow up to concerns through personal contact with students, parents, faculty, administrators and other stakeholders to resolve problems, answer questions and clarify policy.
