What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Materials Physics Department Manager (Manager, R&D Science and Engineering, MG) leads an organization that advances the state-of-knowledge in materials and condensed matter sciences by establishing and implementing a vision for forefront science with broad impact in the fundamental and applied scientific communities.

On any given day, you may be called upon to do the following:



  • Provide strategic vision, leadership, and assure execution of current activities across a wide range of scientific and mission areas

  • Apply scientific and mission knowledge and experience to independently evaluate work quality, performance, and alignment of outcomes with customer expectations

  • Set the highest standard for interdisciplinary collaboration, technical excellence, and world-class scientific accomplishments

  • Identify research directions and support staff in developing successful proposals in response to external and internal funding opportunities

  • Lead the development of customer relationships and funding by understanding and stewarding the organization's work and capabilities, and partnering internally and externally to connect these with potential collaborators, beneficiaries, and customers

  • Work with colleagues across Sandia to ensure alignment between the work of the organization and Sandia's strategic objectives

  • Oversee and manage members of the workforce, including hiring, professional development, and assessment and performance management, consistent with the mission of the organization

  • Oversee and manage deliverables, overall program and project plans, scope, budgets, schedules, and staffing requirements

  • Balance the acquisition and development of staff resources, capabilities, in support of existing and future projects and/or programs

  • Guide and coach staff in connecting their work to customer needs, organizational goals, and Sandia's missions. Ensure that customer needs are satisfied through the forging and sustainment of trust-based relationships with stakeholders inside and outside Sandia

  • Lead the implementation of safe and secure work practices. Participate with internal stakeholders to develop, evaluate, and implement operational methodologies, always seeking efficient and effective approaches to identify and address risks consistent with meeting work scope, schedules, budgets, and organizational goals

  • Support the center leadership team in crafting an organizational vision and objectives that are consistent with Sandia's strategic plan and customer expectations

  • Assist in planning and coordinating a diverse range of research and development activities and processes for new scientific and technological initiatives within and across the organization



Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$187,100 - $317,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or an alternate relevant physical science discipline or an engineering discipline plus two years of demonstrated leadership experience

  • Ability and willingness to travel in support of programmatic and scientific objectives and partnership development

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

  • Experience leading integrated experimental, theoretical, and computational materials science research projects and/or programs

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent written and oral communications skills



About Our Team:

The Materials Physics Department pursues fundamental and use-inspired research in the quantum, electronic, atomic, and structural properties of materials to support programs in energy science, device physics, materials aging and reliability, and national security applications. Specifically, we collaborate closely with other domain knowledge experts to use technical advances to enable and accelerate the development of emerging, nonconventional computing, communication, quantum information materials and devices, and sensors, as well as new or enhanced energy storage and energy conversion methods.

Our research efforts include: surface and interface science; investigation of hydrogen-materials interactions; advanced electronic materials and device concepts for low-energy sensing and neuromorphic computing; ultra-fast materials response; novel nano-electronics behaviors; characterization of quantum topological materials and quantum-confined low-dimensional systems; materials synthesis and device fabrication; and quantum and atomic level computational and theoretical condensed matter physics.

The Materials Physics Department's experimental capabilities include ultra-high vacuum scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy (UHV-STM), ultrasensitive thermal desorption mass spectrometer (TDS), scanning ultra-fast electron microscopy (SUEM), X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), and a microfabrication clean room.
