The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Hot Cell Operator. In this role you will, under limited supervision, assist researchers in experiments of nuclear or radiated material utilizing a manipulator and glove boxes.You will conduct nuclear operations as prescribed by facility procedures and in compliance with ORNL directives and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists R&D staff with R&D mission tasks within the facilities.

  • Assists BVO supervision in ensuring facilities are operated in a compliant manner and are available for research activities.

  • Assists in identifying potential problems, recognizing unexpected results, and troubleshooting some of the more complex operational problems.

  • Obtains qualification as a BVO Hot Cell Operator in accordance with DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Facilities.

  • Uses tele-manipulators and specialized hot cell processing equipment.

  • Qualify and operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other industrial equipment.

  • Prepares clear and accurate documentation (check sheets, data sheets, logs, forms) for any work done.

  • Assists in the removal, inspection, segregation, and disposition of various radioactive waste streams.

  • Keeps work areas in a safe, clear, and orderly condition.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the BVO managers/supervisors.

  • Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health, industrial hygiene, and quality program requirements.

  • Be able to wear PPE such as but not limited to respiratory protection and anti-contamination clothing.

Basic (or Required) Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and a minimum of three years' experience in nuclear operations or an AS degree in a technical field with a minimum of two years of experience in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience in a related technical field will be considered.

  • This position requires Rad Worker II training (trained in-house after hire.)

  • The selected individual must be able to successfully complete NNFD training and examination requirements consistent with DOE Order 426.2 within 24 months. Subject areas will include fundamental topics in mathematics, electrical science, nuclear physics, chemistry, and instrumentation and control, including types of instruments and control systems, principles of operation, and consequences of malfunctions.

  • Additional training will be required relating to facility systems, components, operating parameters and limits, and criticality safety principles, controls, and specifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior work experience in a nuclear facility is highly desirable.

Special Requirements:

  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Visa Sponsorship:Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
