In this critical role, you will be developing products and services that redefine scientific data management at leadership-class scale. We're looking for a software engineer with a creative mind eager to grow and to innovate. You will join a cohort of multi-disciplinary team of experts, united by a dedication to elevate data across a scientific ecosystem. Together, we tackle some of the most compelling challenges, leveraging state-of-the-art technology and developing innovative solutions. This role is nestled within the Data and Platforms Services (DAPS) group of the HPC Operations section at the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS), part of the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop software applications and science-based systems.
  • Harden and deploy research applications and data services at our facility.
  • Collaborate with other research and technical professionals to develop new capabilities that execute on ORNL's mission.
  • leading data and compute infrastructures.
  • Collaborate with users of our software to resolve technical and logical issues.
  • Support multiple technology projects at the same time.
  • Evaluate and test third-party software.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSdegree in computer science or software engineering, with a minimum of 5 years programming experience OR a MSdegree in computer science or software engineering, with a minimum of 4 year programming experience.
  • Proficiency with one or more of the following languages: C/C++ or Python.
  • Proficiency with one or more of the following web technologies: PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS.
  • Proficiency with SQL for efficient design and optimization (e.g., MySQL, MariaDB).
  • Proficiency with Drupal including site building, configuration, and custom module development.
  • Proficient knowledge of container technologies (e.g., Docker).
  • Experience conducting code reviews, ensuring best practices and adherence to software development standards.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Experience setting up and optimizing CI/CD pipelines and working knowledge of test methodologies.
  • Experience with object-oriented design principles and patterns.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive understanding of security best practices and compliance standards to ensure data security, integrity, and compliance standards are met.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and container orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes).
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs and web services integrations.
  • Willingness to learn new programming languages and technologies.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative setting.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to think critically.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
