Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP) - Neuro Oncology

Position Description:

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Neuro-Oncology services in an outpatient setting located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Froedtert Hospital, and the Cancer Center.

This program is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of primary brain tumors as well as neurological complications of cancer. Dr. Jennifer Connelly and Dr. Eunji Yim are part of a multidisciplinary team that provides care for neuro-oncological patients through collaboration with oncological experts in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Neuropathology and Neuroradiology.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching. The APP would join two existing neuro-oncology APPs who have combined 8 years of neuro-oncology experience. The three neuro-oncology APPs will rotate between outpatient neuro-oncology clinic (2 weeks) and the inpatient neuro-oncology consult service (1 week).

The Ideal Candidate is looking to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring neurologic-oncology intervention in outpatient environment as a member of the Neuro-oncology team.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Neuro-Oncology services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • Manages established patients with brain tumors.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Preferred schedule: Generally, Monday - Friday. Flexibility required to provide an appropriate level of patient care coverage. Additional expectation for occasional travel to community locations: Menomonee Falls Cancer Center & Drexel Town Square Center location.

Advanced practice providers with oncology experience preferred.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
