Job Purpose |
Foundation Controller / Assoc. Director of Financial Services directs expert-level professional accounting, financial statement preparation and review, monthly close management,
budget analysis, external audit management, monthly balances and transaction activity reporting, and other financial duties as assigned for the Foundation. Develops processes for internal and external reporting needs associated with campus wide and Foundation projects. Works closely with colleagues in other financial roles across campus. Works closely with Foundation Board Finance and Audit Committees. Serves as interim in the absence of the Director of Financial Services in all fiscal management activities. |
Minimum Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in Accounting and 5+ years of professional experience in accounting or
Auditing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CPA, Public Accounting firm Audit experience, Master's Accounting degree, nonprofit accounting experience, accounting supervisor experience, or 7+ years of applicable experience is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply. |
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Knowledge of the principles, practices, theories and terminology of
GAAP accounting, budgeting and fiscal management. Proficiency with general ledger systems. Must be able to analyze and interpret complex financial data and reports, perform monthly financial statement creation, analysis, and review. Must respond to requests in a timely manner, and communicate effectively to internal team and external parties. Knowledge of State and Federal regulations and laws applicable to non-profit organizations. Must have strong organizational, time management, communication, and supervisory skills. Experience in non-profit organization a plus. Knowledge of Blackbaud software helpful. |
Additional Comments Regarding Position |
May be required to work occasional nights and weekends.

Activity |
Directs, reviews, and participates in the financial accounting monthly close process. Ensures monthly close process is completed timely and accurately by the entire Foundation accounting team. This includes completing journal entry postings to the Foundation general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely posting by other team members, reviewing supporting work product of other team members for accuracy, ensuring proper documentation of all financial transactions, and creating financial statements each month. Verbally and electronically communicates with accounting team members about deadlines and opportunities for improvement in this process.
Develops and monitors implementation of accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Federal, State, Tax, and Audit regulations. Ability to research tax, legal, and accounting guidance issued by regulators. Evaluates and makes recommendations for compliance of accounting policies and procedures as proscribed by accounting regulators.
Review electronic vendor payment processing,
IRS payroll reporting / processing, 1099 reporting for accounts payable, general ledger accounting entries, budgets, revenue entry, and additional financial or operational processes for the Foundation as needed.
Establishes and maintains an effective system for communicating verbally and electronically with internal and external constituents in a timely manner to ensure efficient execution of fund administrator requests and related responses. Advises and provides in person and electronic consultation to campus leaders such as deans, department chairs, and faculty/staff on donor intent use and availability of Foundation funds. Works closely with other financial administrators on campus to provide accurate and timely information. Completes monthly billing expenditures process for charges processed at the College but requiring Foundation funding (approximately $100-250k per month of expenditures).
Ensures bank cash reconciliations are completed and finalized in software system timely each month as part of monthly close. Reconciles bank accounts in a timely manner monthly in Blackbaud Financial Edge software including LLCs (7 operating accounts and one line of credit). Assist with management of banking operations and relationships.
Prepares and distributes monthly accounting statements and information to fund administrators and executive offices across campus. Work with campus administrators to ensure accurate transaction data in their funds and sufficient balances.
Analyzes processes to determine ways to improve systems and operation efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.
Performs written monthly summary analysis of financial statements in report to Director of Finance regarding trends, budget concerns, and/or recommendations of activity in financial statements. |
