Why do we need you ?

CertainTeed is seeking an experienced multidisciplinary Senior Research Engineer I to advance the Roofing business's core capabilities around roofing granules - ceramics and pigments. The new Senior Research Engineer will have the opportunity to work closely in multifunctional and diverse teams to translate complex problems into coherent research programs and make direct impacts in all technical aspects of the product, including:



  • Performance and quality assessment
  • Production process tuning and control
  • Process and product quality improvement
  • New product development
  • Raw materials qualification


This position will have a focus on granules research and development, as well as project management of scale up activities within the Roofing research and development portfolio. The individual should have the ability to build technical depth in multiple areas and agility to work on a wide variety of project types. Additionally, the Senior Research Engineer will conduct analytical testing on granule-based products and process improvements related to the production of residential and commercial shingles. Under the direction of the R&D Manager, the candidate will both manage research projects and scale up projects for Roofing research and development by guiding the team's activities from a strong foundation of scientific principles and research practices.

This will be done by:



  • Working with senior researchers, partners, and stakeholders to organize business concerns and technical topics into coherent programs of research.
  • Investigating problems holistically and efficiently, drawing on both theoretical foundations to inform ideas and experimental finesse to bear them out.
  • Working collaboratively within multiple taskforces across multiple functions and taking various roles to lead, execute, manage, and support projects.
  • Adapting to rapidly evolving business context to ensure that project milestones are targeted appropriately, but also maintaining a scientific steadfastness to ensure that constant progress is maintained, and efforts are not wasted.
  • Demonstrating the ability to manage, document, and organize projects effectively, by communicating objectives, timelines, and milestones to the leadership and cross-functional teams.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of experience or Master's degree with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Material Science Engineering or Materials Engineering, Geology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other related disciplines.





    • General knowledge in materials science, mechanics, and/or chemistry required.
    • Demonstrated experience with analytical instruments and lab-scale process equipment required.
    • Knowledgeable in geology, ceramics, and/or coatings for roofing industry is a plus.
    • Experience with scale up of technology from research and development to high volume manufacturing, ideally in Roofing manufacturing, preferred.
    • Experience in evaluating ceramic raw materials pigments and coatings for the use in roofing products is a plus, as well as knowledge in coating technologies.
    • Trained in 6 Sigma Methodologies, Green or Black Belt certified preferred.
