About the Job

Position Overview

The Medical School VAMC/MS Research Manager will provide research administration and support services for the subset of faculty at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) who have research grants administered by the University of Minnesota/Medical School. This position will also serve as the primary staff liaison between the Medical School and the VAMC for all research-related work involving the Medical School. As such, the incumbent will provide day-to-day support for grant submissions, awards, and various administrative responsibilities for faculty with dual appointments, in addition to participating in school-wide Research Office activities. This individual is also responsible for establishing Medical School- wide infrastructure, processes, and procedures to support this subset of faculty.

The VAMC/MS Research Manager will report to the Medical School's Director of Pre-Award & Proposal Development Services and will spend time on both the VAMC and Medical School campuses developing relationships within both organizations.

Duties/Responsibilities

75%: Research Management, Coordination, and Support

30%: Pre-Award Support

  • Assist with pre-award activities for all Medical School faculty at the VAMC who submit their grants through the University of Minnesota, including Supporting the development, implementation, and coordination of a pre-award support process for all VAMC/MS faculty that is in alignment with Medical School pre-award processes and procedures.
  • Perform grant coordinator functions for some proposals in a working manager capacity, while for other proposals, ensure that the faculty member's University department Grant Coordinator is engaged and supporting the proposal.

15%: Memorandums of Understanding - Research Support

  • Support the development and operationalization of standard processes and procedures with department staff across the Medical School and Sponsored Projects Administration to ensure NIH research-related MOUs are updated per policies and guidelines.

15%: Medical School Research Coordination and Leadership

  • As a member of the Research Office team, work with staff across the Medical School to connect a community of pre-and post-award staff, including assisting with: identifying and disseminating best practices; and providing other school-wide support.

10%: Regulatory Support

  • Ensure the correct regulatory approvals (VAMC and/or UMN) are in place before studies begin. This will include coordinating with the IRB, IACUC, and IBC, as needed, and assisting with streamlining University processes, whenever possible, to efficiently support these faculty.

5%: Reporting

  • Provide periodic updates/reports to the Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Minneapolis VAMC and the Medical School Director of Research Support. This will include developing and managing standard research reporting tools, processes, and procedures to ensure the two leaders have the data and information they need in support of both organizations.

15%: Human Resources

  • Coordinate with human resources staff across Medical School departments to ensure faculty members' human resource needs are being met.

10%: General Administration

  • Provide faculty at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) who have research grants administered by the University of Minnesota Medical School with administrative support, such as connecting these faculty with the correct UMN and VAMC resources and assisting these faculty with bridging the two organizations' policies and procedures to help ensure faculty compliance.
  • Ensure the Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Minneapolis VAMC is aware of research needs of the faculty at the VA and in the Medical School.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS plus at least four years relevant experience, or advanced degree plus at least two years relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least eight years
  • Experience managing a complex and diverse work portfolio.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and managing new tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Pre-award experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business administration.
  • Regulatory experience.
  • Experience working across multiple organizations.
  • Proven strong interpersonal and collaborative skills and ability to build strong relationships across teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a part of a team and individually.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000 - $90,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
