Summary: Under the supervision of the Brown University Health Risk Services Brown Health Director of Insurance and Business Operations position requires an in-depth understanding of property and casualty insurance and an ability to apply insurance skills to the complexities of an academic hospital and multi-state healthcare system. Position requires an intimate knowledge of the Brown Health property and casualty self-insurance and commercial program. The Insurance Manager will endeavor to meet Brown Health insurance and underwriting risk profile objectives and provide insurance expertise to Brown Health and address insurance questions and requests. Responsibilities include but not limited to the following: Coordinating insurance renewals; managing insurance broker actuarial and TPA relationships; updating and coordination of policies and forms; Physician rate and specialty market review and benchmarking; maintain and ensure the accuracy of the policy management system; working with internal and external customers to assist with insurance contracts underwriting certificates and claim history requests. Responsibilities: Work closely with Brown Health Director Insurance & Operations to develop and maintain an intimate knowledge of the Brown Health self-insurance and commercial program and assist with addressing Brown Health leadership insurance program inquiries and board presentations. Work closely with insurance broker and Insurance Service Coordinators to renew and procure all property and casualty insurance lines. Coordinate strategic review meetings and presentations to commercial insurance markets. Review and submit applications and address supplemental questions and subjectivities. Ensure invoices are paid in a timely manner and policies are received and reflect renewal changes. Work with broker to maintain *Open Items* follow-up tracking and maintaining the insurance renewal calendar. Supervise the Business and Accounting Analyst. Develop insurance budget projections and conduct monthly budget variance analysis for each line of insurance. Work with Business and Accounting Analyst to develop physician budgets. Work closely with actuary to provide annual actuarial statistics for self-insurance program. Provide insurance expertise to support contract inquiries from Supply Chain GC and Property Management. Assist claims department with coverage inquiries and provide insurance support for complex claims with broker claims advocates. Develop and maintain Executive Summaries for individual lines of insurance. Conduct claim loss analysis for all insurance lines. Prepare and present loss ratio analysis for provider groups (BHMG-RI BHMG-MA BHMG-Primary Care and Foundation and Community Providers). On-board new service lines and facilities assist with Certificate of Needs and bonds and provider 5-yr cost projection inquiries. Property Insurance duties include working with property management to maintain the property locations file and communicate location changes to property and pollution brokers. Development and maintenance of Business Interruption and Total Insured Value files. Coordinate independent property appraisals for our hospitals and high valued off-campus sites. Work closely with Loss Prevention and facilities to monitor risk exposures. Develop property deductible summary for claims department. Oversight of auto self-insurance program including third-party auto administration services. Assist with TPA assessment and periodic RFP for TPA services and contract negotiations. Annually conduct Physician rate and specialty market review and benchmarking analysis. Recommend rate and specialty changes to Brown Health Director of Insurance & Operations. Annually update Brown Health Malpractice Plan (BHMP) rate tables and provider applications. Annually conduct Unrelated vs. Related Risk Analysis by collecting third-party volume statistic and applying Net Written Premium to determine percentage of unrelated risk. Communicate results to management. Address auditor inquiries. Assist with annual audit inquiries for Brown Health captive RISE and Brown Health Risk Services. Develop Medicare cost report requests including hospital insurance cost allocation. Collect and submit insurance benchmarking data for VP of Risk Management. Assist with broker assessment and periodic RFP for broker services and contract negotiations. Updating claims system policies for insurance renewal changes. Communicating insurance renewal changes to Risk Management and Risk Services personnel to ensure general understanding of coverage. Work with Physician Group practices and other Brown Health organizational entity leadership to address underwriting coverage requests. Underwriting will include gathering and summarizing relevant information to assist Brown Health Director Insurance & Operations underwriting decisions. Working with Brown Health insurance Director and outside general counsel on RISE policy and Indemnification Agreement documentation updates; maintaining current versions; and retiring and archiving documents. Coordinate and supervise the use of Brown Health and RISE forms and documents. Ensure the latest versions for all forms are maintained and organized - in an easy to find user friendly manner - on Brown Health shared drive. Ensure latest versions are utilized by Brown Health staff. Ensure latest forms are synchronized with versions maintained with Brown Health outside general counsel and the underwriting/policy management system. Work with Business and Accounting Analyst to ensure document updates and changes are made within the underwriting/policy management system. System administration responsibilities including User Acceptance Testing report writing and form logic. Utilizing Brown Health underwriting/policy management system coordinate the renewal Brown Health Malpractice Plan (BHMP) application process for affiliated medical physician groups (MPG). Work with MPG*s business or practice manager(s) to ensure physician and advanced practice providers (e.g. nurse practitioners physician assistants etc.) are maintained in the underwriting/policy management system. Download information from underwriting/policy management system into excel to analyze and create meaningful reports. Sign self-insurance program certificates for contracts events and camp programs. Physician practice and payer credentialing department claims history requests. Work closely with Brown Health claims analysts to verify provider coverage and provide supporting documentation as necessary. Work closely with Brown Health Loss Prevention team Claims team Business and Accounting Analyst and insurance coordinator support staff. Assist the Brown Health Director Insurance and Business Operations with gathering information for presentations. As directed participate in special projects requiring knowledge of department organization and Brown Health insurance program. Must be able to utilize software programs such as Microsoft Word Outlook Excel and PowerPoint. Perform other office support duties as necessary. May assume regular responsibilities for recurring projects or programs requiring knowledge of department or corporate operations and the use of independent judgment. Perform other related duties as required. Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor*s Degree in business. BS in Accounting preferred. Associates in Risk Management (ARM) certification Claims license or other insurance experience preferred. EXPERIENCE: Three-to-five years of experience demonstrating strong analytical and excel skills and customer service and business support functions. Experience in an insurance or finance environment preferred. Requires excellent organizational and detail management skills and ability to communicate effectively with a variety of customers including Brown Health leadership physicians and business managers and directors. Strong knowledge of Personal Computers with proficiency in Microsoft Office especially Excel. Software insurance policy management applications are desirable. Must have a positive attitude good organizational skills and ability to prioritize activities effectively. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Professional office environment. Work on computer for extended periods of time. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Work is performed under general supervision but the individual must be comfortable working independently and using independent judgment in a busy office environment. The individual refers specific problems to the Brown Health Director Insurance & Business Operations where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
