Position Purpose
Using our campus, woodlands and farm for place-based experiential learning is a priority of the Dartmouth Climate Collaborative. The Campus as Lab Program Manager will serve as a communicator, operational liaison and coordinator for faculty and student research, and scholarship focused on our campus, Dartmouth lands and in our surrounding community. These projects may generate research that inform advancements in built and natural systems, infrastructure, and processes, as well as meaningful learning experiences for Dartmouth students. The Manager will identify tools needed to ensure well designed Campus as Lab ( CAL) projects going forward, and work within the Sustainability Office and with broader Campus Services team members to build them. This position is both art and science, and requires a high level of interpersonal skill, empathy and listening ability, as well as project and time management capability. Note: This is a three-year term, benefits eligible position

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in sustainability-related field.
  • Experience working in an academic context.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting research or providing support within research and operational environments.
  • Skill in project management, operations and research coordination, data management and analytical skills, ideally including rigorous valuation of environmental assets.
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, collaborative publication, and translation of ideas across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated community engagement skills in a complex social environment.
  • Proven track record of positive contributions to team dynamics, supporting colleagues in a highly motivated and evolving environment.
  • A sense of humor.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively across a broad range of disciplines and campus constituents (faculty, students, and staff).


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree (or equivalent training)
  • 3-5 years' experience in an academic setting in operations or academics.
  • Advanced understanding of global sustainability and ability to translate that understanding to the applied local scale.
  • Proven experience in project management in the context of academic research, scholarship or in academic operations.

Description
Manage Projects
Manages Campus as Lab ( CAL) projects to ensure the effective delivery of 4-8 projects per year:

  • Identify campus and Dartmouth lands-based research opportunities and assess interest among the appropriate faculty well in advance of any "shovels in the ground"
  • Serve as operational logistics liaison for students and faculty interested in utilizing campus systems (energy, water, food, buildings, purchasing, landscape, etc.) in research and teaching
  • Serve as liaison for campus operational and service units who receive coordination requests and who generate CAL research ideas
  • Serve as the data coordinator for academic community members seeking campus systems performance data

Description
Align Research Needs with Projects

Supports the incorporation of research needs into operational projects to ensure alignment of research with campus services operational considerations:

  • Provide ongoing project management associated with select environmental monitoring programs based in Facilities (forest management, soil monitoring, etc)
  • Spearhead focused campus research projects as needed that address local/regional sustainability issues and build on operational interests and expertise

Data Management

Collaborates with operational units to manage data and make data available to faculty and students, develops data tools and analyses data to determine the effectiveness of these tools:

  • Collaborate with operational units to improve data resources for research use
  • Collaborate with IT to develop a central data management and data delivery platform for use by the operational and academic communities
  • Lead data analysis efforts where needed, including conducting survey research where appropriate
  • Support sustainability impact analyses, and team publications on repeatable/scalable practices

Conduct Campus as Lab Outreach

Actively conducts Campus as Lab ( CAL) outreach to ensure a stable pipeline of CAL projects and effectively captures and communicates the impact of CAL initiatives to increase visibility:

  • Actively and consistently conduct CAL outreach to departments and students across a broad range of disciplines
  • Develop resources for students and faculty seeking CAL opportunities (including web-based and print materials)
  • Capture and communicate the impact of CAL initiatives and enhance visibility
  • Serve as advisor to students, faculty, academic professionals, and staff developing CAL proposals, including feasibility assessment, budget and timeline development as needed
  • Support Dartmouth in advancing best practices across higher education
