Position title: Instrument Scientist (Assistant Project Scientist) Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project _ (E.g., Scientist) Series Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $60,000 - $96,000. Percent time:
Variable, the minimum percentage will be 50% time, but can be increased up to 100% if additional funding from grants is obtained. Anticipated start:

Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding. UCO operates telescope facilities to provide UC astronomers with access to forefront optical and infrared observatories and develops advanced instrumentation for the Lick, Keck, and Thirty Meter Telescope Observatories. Under the direction of Director Bruce Macintosh, the scientist will work on next-generation instrumentation projects including the SCALES infrared spectrograph and Keck Adaptive Secondary Mirror. The candidate will play a lead role in these projects during the design, integration, and/or test phases by providing scientific and project management support. The scientist will also contribute to development of other UCO projects and instrument concepts. The nature of the position will require the Instrument Scientist to successfully collaborate with others. Applicants with experience in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: Deploying astronomical instrumentation; spectrograph design; optical and infrared instrumentation; scientific project management; scientific systems engineering; and/or record of collaborative work experience.
