About this Position

Our Environmental Project Managers work on a variety of NEPA projects, from Categorical Exclusions (CatExs) to large and complex Environmental Assessments (EAs) to support Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), covering a multitude of service areas. We are seeking a seasoned Environmental Project Manager with demonstrated experience leading NEPA and planning projects that have a nexus with various federal agencies such as the US Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, Natural Resources and Conservation Service, Western Area Power Association, and others. Pinyon employs technical experts across numerous disciplines, such as air quality and noise, biological resources/wetlands, hazardous materials, cultural resources, and water resources/quality. As an Environmental Project Manager, you will be coordinating these multidisciplinary teams to advance our clients' project goals and to help projects navigate the requirements of NEPA. We pride ourselves on identifying project roadblocks and working in concert with regulators and the project team to negotiate a path forward in ways that are environmentally conscientious, as well as cost- and time-effective for our clients. You'll never get bored in this position, as you'll have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and expertise in new ways to every project you lead.

People successful in this position foster deep relationships with technical experts internally across the Project Delivery team, as well as develop external relationships with local, state, and federal agency personnel. Although we work in a fast-paced environment, we strive to appropriately balance workloads for all our employees: our goal is to keep our employees engaged with meaningful work, while preventing burnout. Pinyon has a flexible employee hierarchy, which means you will have the opportunity to explore careers paths without getting siloed into one specialty or market. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience to primarily support our current federal NEPA & Planning portfolio, and occasionally contribute to projects in other markets such as in the transportation space. Ideally, this candidate would work from our Lakewood, Colorado headquarters, but remote work options may be considered.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of Categorical Exclusions and Environmental Assessments, meeting requirements for various federal agencies as noted above.
  • Complete technical analysis for one or more of the NEPA-adjacent technical resource areas, especially those not covered by Pinyon's other technical groups (e.g., socioeconomics, recreation, land use).
  • Complete technical scopes for proposals.
  • Complete Quality Assurance and Quality Control reviews for NEPA documents and technical reports.
  • Client engagement and business development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental discipline (e.g., environmental science, biology, environmental planning, environmental engineering).
  • 10+ years of NEPA experience, ideally with a land management agency(s) such as the USFS, NRCS, BLM, USACE, Department of Defense, etc.
  • 5+ years of Project Management experience with a portfolio that includes leading the successful completion of Environmental Assessments.
  • Consulting experience is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of Section 106, Section 7, and Section 404 clearance and permitting requirements, including state join permit application processes.
  • Strong technical writing skills and effective communication skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplined team of resource specialists (e.g., biologists, planners, historians) is required.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a background check.
