Position Overview
The Engineering Technician will be responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining laboratory equipment. This may include mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and software programming such as Labview Data Acquisition programming. The Engineering Technician will work for the new NSF Engineering Research Center - Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (EARTH) in the LEEP2 Engineering complex and report to Prof. Mark B. Shiflett, Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas.

Job Description
50% Mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation design, construction, and maintaining experimental equipment.
  • Models testing apparatus using Fusion 360.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctioning lab equipment.
  • Assist engineers in creating products, improving research process methods, and maintaining assembly systems.
  • Perform research, build prototypes, and inspect products in the direction of lead engineers.
  • Install, maintain and repair mechanical systems, and electrical systems.
  • Install electrical equipment such as relays and solenoids for experiments.
  • Use Microcontroller to build test equipment.

45 % Software programming such as labview software and operation of experimental apparatus.
  • Program tests using Labview or Python.
  • Run tests and correct issues within the programs.
  • Extract data from test programs, manage and filter data utilizing Excel, and send data to engineers for analysis. Additionally, further refine Labview programs to meet engineer's analysis needs.
  • Pre-test analysis to determine program needs and develop programs based on testing requirements.

5% Support as needed for lead researchers
  • Coordinate shipments with transportation companies from different locations to deliver research material to KU and other research institutions.
  • Conduct monthly assessments of gas and chemical inventory.
  • Decontaminate labs after experiments.
  • Provide support to the entire Wonderful Institute for Sustainable Engineering.
  • Attend safety meetings, joint lab group meetings, and project meetings with industry partners.

Position Requirements
This position works on-site but remote work may be considered per mutual agreement between the Institute for Sustainable Engineering and selected candidate.

Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, we cannot currently offer employment to candidates residing in the following states: California and Delaware. Required Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma/GED Equivalency.
  2. One year of experience with design and construction of laboratory experimental apparatus.
  3. One year of experience with instrumentation and controls.
  4. Experience with sourcing proper materials for a range of projects, as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Programming as evidenced by application materials.
  6. Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with LabView software.
  2. Experience with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  3. Experience in time management skills and the ability to prioritize workflow.
