Essential Job Duties
As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the UNC School offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. The activities of The School Services, Inc. include assisting the School with or carrying out research, consulting, advising, training and educational workshops and seminars, and other services and projects.
The Legislative Reporting Office represents The School; keeping with the school's mission, all school personnel must remain policy-neutral and conduct themselves with the utmost decorum and professionalism at all times.
The UNC School is hiring a person to work in both the Legislative Reporting Service ( LRS) office in Raleigh and the Academic Publication Division in Chapel Hill. This person would work as an office assistant in the LRS office during the periods the North Carolina General Assembly is in session, beginning with the 2025 long session, and as a Publication's editor in Chapel Hill and remotely during the legislative interims.
This is a great position for someone who would like to work in a fast-paced, interesting, and dynamic environment.

Location & Schedule:

This position will typically be in person in the Raleigh LRS office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during these sessions.

There may be opportunities for remote work on Mondays and Fridays.

Requirements and Preferences


Work Schedule Monday- Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM, 35 hours per week
Other Work/Responsibilities
Office Assistant (when in legislature):
Assisting LRS staff with keeping up-to-date on the progress of proposed legislation, including monitoring floor sessions and committee meetings via an audio web link.

  • Assisting with non-legal bill analysis and the creation of bill summaries in an online word processing program for posting on the LRS website.
  • Edit bill summaries written by other LRS staff members.
  • Other office tasks such as answering the phone, retrieving documents, filing, and so forth.


Publications Editor (when not in legislature):

  • When the legislature is not in session, this position will proofread and edit the School publications. Proofreading page proofs line-for-line against academic manuscripts, ranging in length from 25 to more than 1,500 pages, for accuracy and consistency, while applying principles of grammar, composition, and style.
  • Editing manuscripts that require varying levels of substantive editing and analysis, basic researching, harmonizing the "voice" of multiple authors, minor rewriting, and content restructuring.

Minimum Experience/Education
  • We require a bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment, or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Department Required Skills
  • The person in this position should be proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, Outlook, and general word processing skills.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • The preferred candidate will have experience in editing and proofreading in an academic environment and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and Bluebook.
