Position Summary
The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

The College of Education and Allied Professions and the School of Nursing is inviting applications for an 11- month full time, fixed-term Health Services Coordinator and an Instructor/Assistant Professor of Practice (rank to be determined at hire). This position will be embedded at The Catamount School with teaching responsibilities within the School of Nursing.

The primary role of this position is to serve Health Services Coordinator at The Catamount School ( TCS) as well as in a faculty role with the School of Nursing, teaching both didactic courses as well as providing direct clinical supervision of nursing students at the Catamount School and other locations. TCS is a 6th through 8th grade lab school operated by Western Carolina University ( WCU) in partnership with Jackson County Public Schools ( JCPS). The Health Services Coordinator will provide school nursing services for The Catamount School, to support the prevention of illness and disability, and early detection and correction of health problems to support the Whole School, Whole Child model. The successful candidate will be uniquely qualified with skills in preventive health, health assessment, collaborative planning and knowledge of community resources.
To meet State Board of Education and Board of Nursing requirements, the candidate must hold current unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina and possess a minimum of three years' experience as a professional Registered Nurse. The faculty title will be Instructor or Assistant Professor of Practice, depending on qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Faculty role (half of FTE)

  1. Teach a minimum of 6 credits per semester, to include clinical oversight and instruction of nursing student placements at The Catamount School.
  2. Serve as a preceptor for nursing students during clinical rotations of nursing students at the Catamount School and other locations. Identify service learning opportunities for nursing students to support the role of the school nurse
  3. Identify service learning opportunities for nursing students to support the role of the school nurse.
  4. Participate in faculty team meetings as appropriate.



Health Services Coordinator Role (half of FTE - at least two full school days per week, plus additional time to accomplish the following)

  1. Conduct health assessments of Catamount school students.
  2. Develop and implement individual health care plans (IHP) for students.
  3. Maintain, evaluate, and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.
  4. Participate as the health specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the health individualized educational plan (IEP).
  5. Plan and implement school health management protocols for the child with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication.
  6. Work with leadership team and Community of Care team to develops procedures and provides for crises intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances.
  7. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases.
  8. Recommend provisions for a school environment conducive to learning.
  9. Provide information on health to students, staff and families.
  10. Coordinate school and community health activities and serves as a liaison person between the home, school, and community.
  11. Engage in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
  12. Serve as a resource person to school personnel. Participate selectively in classroom instruction under the supervision of the teacher.
  13. Help develop/revise school health policies, procedures and protocols, including medication administration.
  14. Prepare the budget for school health supplies.
  15. Review, revise and implement emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel.
  16. Prepare first aid kits for each building. Assures school personnel have completed required training.
  17. Report regularly to the principal and superintendent on school health activities.
  18. Prepare statistical reports for the Department of Educational and Cultural Services and Department of Human Services for the superintendent's signature as required.

Minimum Qualifications
The candidate must be a registered nurse (RN) and have at least three (3) years of experience working with children/families, and adults in health, preventative and wellness care. Candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills; and evidence of skill in working with at risk populations. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions. Bachelor-prepared nurses may serve as clinical instructors at WCU; if hired, a training program must be completed.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have a Master's Degree in Nursing and have working knowledge of child welfare, developmental disabilities, mental health and/or primary healthcare fields. Additional preferred skills include experience using Excel and electronic health care systems to review and manage data, service coordination and information, linkages, and referrals for community-based services. The individual should be self-motivated; organized; student-centered; outcome oriented; technologically proficient; possess strong interpersonal relationship skills including collaboration with diverse individuals and families; receptive to innovative
practices/procedures; willing to take the initiative to learn the duties/ responsibilities/ expectations of the work and operations of the lab school; and willing to work alone or as a group/team when necessary.
