Heavy Equipment Operator II

The Heavy Equipment Operator II operates a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment including tractors, tandem dump, roll back, and bucket trucks, backhoes, and skid steers used in a variety of park maintenance and improvement projects. Performs equipment loading and transport, snow plowing, and equipment inspections for safety and proper function. Acts as crew leader when designated by the Central Maintenance Administrator and engages in manual labor as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Central Maintenance Administrator. Annual performance goals will be set for the Heavy Equipment Operator II.

Hiring Salary Range: $50,563.43 - $60,876.91

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Operate various heavy equipment such as tractors, tandem dump, roll back, and bucket trucks, backhoes, and skid steers.
• Oversee assigned projects and work orders.
• Act as crew or project lead when designated.
• Ability to train employees in the safe operation of equipment.
• Load, secure, and safely transport a variety of heavy and other equipment to designated locations.
• Operate equipment in various projects such as digging for broken water or sewer lines.
• Perform basic equipment maintenance, such as changing oil, checking fluids, diagnosing tread wear, replacing batteries, and troubleshooting problems.
• Maintain thorough and accurate records of assigned work orders, repairs, preventive maintenance, and servicing through web-based maintenance software.
• Perform work using chain saws and appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Determine needed resources; order and maintain tools and supplies.
• Keep abreast of current standards, practices, and procedures in heavy equipment operation.
• Maintain keen awareness of safety precautions and potential hazards.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (minimum)

Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Physical: Manual work with strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions in outdoor and/or maintenance shop settings; will perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions; lift items equal to or greater than 80 pounds; climb ladders; operate equipment and use tools.

Experience: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the completion of a high school degree or GED, plus two years of experience operating motorized construction equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides:

• Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain "Class A" CDL driver's license with safe driving record.
• Considerable skill in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of methods, practices, and materials involved in heavy equipment operation projects.
• Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions.
• Knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations
• Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
• Availability for call in emergency situations.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
