Position Description
Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth, gums, and related oral structures of inmate patients and employees injured as a result of TDCJ-ID activities. Insures that appropriate dental care is accessible and provided to the inmate population in a timely fashion. Renders dental judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit. Works under general direction of the Regional Dental Director, with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Directly supervises 2-4 dental hygienists in the unit dental services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Effectively expresses ideas/information in a complete, clear, concise, organized, and timely manner appropriate for the audience. Actively listens to others and is open to suggestions.
    Quality communication yields working relationships yielding team success. Advises Dental Director when clinic has down-time for any reason.
  • Possesses sufficient knowledge, skill, and ability to perform all aspects of the job effectively, efficiently, and safely.
  • Peer review of dental care records shows appropriate use of SOAP format for evaluations of dental complaints. Documents vital signs before local anesthetic. Meets community standards of care. Follows Texas Tech guidelines for use of EMR.
  • Develops and manages workforce based on the organizational goals by ensuring that employees are recruited, selected, compensated, trained, developed, promoted, disciplined, and appraised according to TTUHSC policy and procedure.
  • Addresses individual subordinates' development in Performance Evaluations and in actions taken to engage staff in growth activities. In-service records show that infection control policy is reviewed annually. Total hours of other dental related in-service topics meet accrediting body standards.


Required Qualifications
Current license to practice dentistry by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners required. Current Drug Enforcement Agency controlled substances registration certificate required.
