The Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Dermatology is a key leadership position responsible for driving research initiatives, fostering innovation, and enhancing the department's research profile. This role involves strategic planning, collaboration, and mentorship to advance dermatological research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

The Department of Dermatology's research mission is to elucidate the molecular and cellular basis of diseases affecting the skin and to apply this new knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, and cure of these diseases. The department's focus has historically been cutaneous immunology and oncology and stem cell biology/regenerative medicine and has recently expanded its focus to incorporate precision dermatology under the leadership of Dr. Maryam Asgari (Chair). The research development program has been funded through an NIH research training grant for 35 years.

The basic science research team includes 6 faculty members and 4 postdoctoral fellows whereas the clinical research is focused on clinical trials. With respect to space, the 72 members of the Department are based in Dermatology Research Space in Research Complex 1 South, in Gates Center Research Space in Research Complex 2, Children's Hospital Colorado, and the Rocky Mountain Regional VAMC. We are a nationally highly ranked research department, consistently ranking in the top 20 in Blue-Ridge rankings.



  • Strategic Leadership:

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive research strategy aligned with the department's goals and institutional priorities.
    • Identify emerging trends in dermatological research and prioritize initiatives that address unmet clinical needs.
    • Enhance and promote the quality and profile of the department's research activities by helping recruit and retain a research-oriented faculty.


  • Research Development:

    • Oversee the process for development and submission of grant proposals, promoting funding opportunities from federal, private, and industry sources.
    • Facilitate the growth of collaborative research projects within the department and across disciplines.
    • Enhance the conduct of clinical trials

      • In conjunction with Director of Clinical Trials, identify appropriate sponsored clinical trials which either advance faculty interests or represent unmet patient needs.
      • Developing methods to manage the clinical research enrollment mission in the department to ensure enrollment targets are met and exceeded.
      • Identifying barriers to performing clinical trials, come up with potential solutions, and work with Chair to address.




  • Mentorship and Training:

    • In conjunction with the Director of Research Mentoring, provide structured mentorship (including an individualized research development plan) for research-oriented faculty, fellows, and students.
    • In conjunction with the Director of Faculty Development, ensure that research faculty have the opportunities for advancement.
    • Organizes workshops and seminars (including T32 Seminars and Research In Progress Seminars) to enhance research skills and knowledge in the field of dermatology.
    • Oversee departmental research-focused seed funding mechanisms, including Medical Student Research Program and faculty seed funding (melanoma faculty grant).


  • Collaboration:

    • Foster partnerships with other departments, institutions, and industry to promote interdisciplinary research. This includes enhancing relationships with Gates Institute and other institutional research entities with the goal of actively developing new clinical and translational research collaborations, particularly those that translate research into enhanced patient care.
    • Engage with community organizations and stakeholders to support research initiatives and outreach.
    • Ensure departmental representation in research-focused institutional committees (i.e., IRB, animal care and use committee) to ensure research regulatory compliance and serve as a bi-directional conduit of information for the department.


  • Oversight and Evaluation:

    • Monitor research activities to ensure compliance with ethical standards, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.
    • Routinely meet with research faculty to gain insight into research faculty needs including helping find ways to help seek resources for new equipment and supplies.
    • Assists Chair with conducting and managing annual reviews of research faculty.


  • Dissemination of Research:

    • Promote the publication of research findings in high-impact journals and facilitate presentations at national and international conferences.
    • Disseminates relevant institutional research information to research faculty (in partnership with Chair).
    • Encourage the development of clinical trials and translational research to bridge basic science and clinical practice.
    • Organize mini seminar(s) prior to major dermatology scientific meetings (such as SID meeting) to encourage trainees and faculty to have a vehicle to receive feedback on their presentations prior to presenting outside of department.


  • Resource Management:

    • Oversee Departmental Research Core
    • In partnership with the Director of Finance and Administration, ensure efficient allocation of resources and support for research initiatives.
    • Advocates to Chair for necessary resources and infrastructure to enhance research capabilities within the department.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • MD or MD, PhD
  • Demonstrated track record of successful research in dermatology, including high-impact publications and sustained grant funding.
  • Proven experience in leadership roles, with the ability to inspire and mentor a diverse team of researchers.
  • Qualify for appointment to the University of Colorado Department of Dermatology faculty at the rank of full Professor.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • History of NIH funding, publications, and mentorship.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$284,525 - $317,023

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at 0.2 FTE salary support. It is expected that the candidate will couple this FTE with one or more of the tripartite mission areas (research, clinical care or teaching) to equal a 1.0 FTE. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
