Position Summary |
The Media Services and Instruction Manager runs day-to-day operations of the Media and Design Center (
MDC) at the University Libraries. This includes media labs, production spaces and supporting operating systems, the media production instruction program and related management database, and media production equipment service and management of the related digital booking and technical equipment management system.
The position provides leadership and planning for the lab's media production hardware, software and extensive digital storage system; applying expert media production skills and technical knowledge in support of the variety of services offered in the media labs -effectively providing systems support, troubleshooting, resolving tech issues, and providing experienced consultation to our campus clients.
The Media Services and Instruction Manager administers the suite of technical and pedagogical services and resources offered via the MDC's production lab including but not limited to: overseeing the
MDC instruction calendar; managing the lab's libguides, tutorials, and other online resources; and researching, planning, and assessment of lab instruction.
Working closely with the MDC's instruction team and reporting to the Head of the
MDC, the Media Services and Instruction Manager provides project management for the
MDC instruction services - effectively schedules and teaches classes, workshops, and course-integrated instruction sessions, provides media production and media assignment design consultation to faculty, designs programs, creates tutorials and related online resources, as well as provides related instruction training to
MDC staff.
The Media Services and Instruction Manager oversees the MDC's Media Equipment cage and associated services including managing and maintaining the equipment for use; managing equipment inventory; managing purchase requests and reconciling receipt of equipment; researching and trialing new equipment; surplussing old equipment and engaging directly with vendors as needed. The Media Services and Instruction Manager trains all
MDC staff on new and existing circulating equipment and works to forecast trends and emerging technology related to the MDC's programs and services. This position is also required to help supervise the MDC's student staff and assist with general public service support for all of our patron services.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement to include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration; Networking Technology, or related areas and two years of experience in the Information Technology field related to the position's role; or a
- Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position's role, or a
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math or Engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position's role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Demonstrated experience teaching or providing classroom instruction
* Extensive demonstrated experience effectively creating with Adobe Creative Cloud
* Digital media production experience (including capture, composition, and editing) using a variety of digital media production hardware (cameras, field recorders, mics, lighting, and other peripherals) and software
* Extensive demonstrated experience effectively using the
MAC OS environment and Windows OS environment
* Demonstrated experience providing systems support, troubleshooting, resolving tech issues, and providing consultation
* Demonstrated experience working effectively in a team-based, public service environment
* Strong visual, written, and oral communication skills |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Experience with assignment and instructional design and knowledge of Universal Design for Learning
* Experience with Mac OS X installation, configuration, and basic troubleshooting
* Current awareness of developing trends in multimedia production and ability to apply it to relevant
MDC research, teaching, and learning
* Coursework in Digital Media Production, Design or Communication
* Understanding of visual communication concepts and/or digital and media literacies
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while seamlessly supporting multiple clients (faculty, students, and staff) |
