Senior BMS Functional Safety Engineer

The Battery Management Systems (BMS) Sr. Functional Safety Specialist will support and provide leadership for the development of BMS software for the family of next generation xEV powertrains. The selected candidate will help define and refine BMS requirements for software and control algorithms, develop & maintain the BMS DFMEA and its associated DVP and will assist/advise other team members in activities related to software and Functional Safety compliance and capability.

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:




  • Develop and globally harmonize BMS software requirements from system requirements - specific to Functional Safety
  • Ensure compliance to corporate standards
  • Work cross functionally to verify functional safety and battery software requirements meet all customer needs
  • Support software DREs in root cause analysis of issues and documenting lessons learned/best practices as needed
  • Support systems engineers in requirements management duties
  • Develop and maintain BMS software DFMEA and its associated DVP
  • Lead Safety Assessments for Software and Validation
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to other software, systems, and FuSA engineers along with supporting their development and training.



Additionally, the BMS FUSA Specialist will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of technical specifications outlining best practices for BMS software systems along with understanding & tracking all system and vehicle requirements related to BMS software. The Engineer will participate in battery critical design reviews focusing on BMS FUSA design and development & validation. The Engineer will work with the product release and software DREs to solve application issues during BMS software design & testing. The BMS FUSA Specialist will collaborate with other battery COE specialists (cell, BMS HW, system, and electrical) and vehicle teams to develop a robust software design for high performance battery systems.

Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience in software development and/or Functional Safety for automotive and related industries
  • 5 or more years of experience with electronic systems
  • 3 or more years of experience with development and testing of control system software for hybrid and/or electric vehicles
  • Experience with software development, diagnostics and data analysis tools (e.g., HIL testers, CANalyzer, INCA, etc.)



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Masters or advanced degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university
  • Proficiency with requirements tools such as DOORS and CANape
  • Experience using a disciplined system development process based on ASPICE or CMMI model
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Thorough system level knowledge of electrification technology functionality and features
  • High Voltage training and advanced battery design/development experience is desirable
  • Knowledge of battery test methods and procedures
  • Lithium ion battery experience
  • Experience with electrical/electronic components used in BMS hardware
  • 5 years experience in application and validation of functional safety
