About the Job

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a non-tenure track, annually renewable position at the rank of Lecturer to begin fall of 2025. The ideal candidate will preferably be a specialist in either Golden Age Spanish or Central American literature and cultural studies. The department is also seeking applicants with an interest in teaching courses related to the Spanish health humanities. The department seeks candidates who will demonstrate teaching excellence in their area of specialization as well as the Spanish language. ABD candidates will be considered but must have their degree in hand prior to September 2025. As a Lecturer, the successful applicant will be eligible for renewable merit salary increases, promotion to the rank of 'Senior Lecturer', professional development funds, and medical, dental, and retirement benefits.

Candidates will teach a 3-3 course load with a salary range of $45,000-$60,000. Complete applications received by March 10th, 2025 will be given full consideration.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate language, critical analysis, and advanced elective courses; other courses as needed, conditional on qualifications.
  • Provide administrative support relating to teaching duties and language course responsibilities, when appropriate to the appointment.
  • Assist with test development and/or administration.
  • Coordinate and mentor Graduate Instructors and P&A academic staff, when appropriate to the appointment. This responsibility may include presenting workshops as needed for course coordination.
  • Serve as member of appropriate departmental committees.
  • Engage in professional development activities, including Orientation Week.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Spanish or Portuguese, or a related field in Education, the Humanities or Social Sciences. For Spanish for the Health Humanities, other relevant professional degrees will be considered (e.g. certification in medical interpreting)
  • Native or near-native fluency in the Spanish language
  • Two years post-secondary teaching experience in the relevant language and/or literature.
  • Positive evaluations from students, peers, and/or supervisors.
  • Demonstration of commitment to quality teaching and program development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Specialization in Golden Age Spanish literature and cultural studies or Central American literature and cultural studies
  • Interest and/or experience in teaching Spanish for the Health Humanities

Founded in the 1960s, the Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, is widely recognized as a pioneer in the interdisciplinary study of language, literature and more broadly, cultural expressions grounded in theorized and broadly socio-historical perspectives.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $45,500-$60,000 annual; depending on education/qualifications/experience
