Job Description:

Responsibilities
The Research Scientist I will work within the Birth Defects Lifespan Studies Section in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology, Center for Environmental Health. The incumbent will join a team of public health professionals to work on CDC cooperative agreements to study prevalence; healthcare access, utilization, and cost; short- and long-term outcomes; and disparities in access to specialty care and outcomes for individuals living with birth defects and neuromuscular disorders, specifically congenital heart defects, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy. The incumbent will perform literature searches related to birth defects; collect, organize, handle, and evaluate project-related data; participate in problem definition, planning and execution of birth defects surveillance and research; and analyze data and interpret results including development of SAS programs, data cleaning, and data analysis; prepare reports, presentations, posters, tables, charts and graphs; and work with senior staff to draft manuscripts for publication in scientific journals based on analyses.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public/Environmental Health, or a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master's degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental/Public Health or a related field and one year experience conducting epidemiological research and data management/data analysis. Experience managing and analyzing large data sets. Experience with statistical analysis using SAS. Experience writing manuscripts based on analyses. Familiarity with Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) data and/or birth defects data and/or vital records data.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will be available.

Travel, up to 10%, will be required.
