Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex marine infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively seeking an Engineering Technologist with a focus on the geospatial aspects of asset management development. The successful new hire may be seated in Baltimore, MD; Norfolk, VA; or Baton Rouge, LA. Alternatively, this position may work from home in a state for which we have office locations but must be prepared to travel regularly.

As the successful Engineering Technologist, you will have more than 5 years of experience with the development and operations of asset management systems with geospatial data integrations. You will also learn to perform structural assessments in the field as a Certified Diver. As an inspector, you would be part of a team that evaluates marine structures and bridges through above and underwater engineering inspections, follow-on report preparation and development of structural repair designs. You would utilize modern workflows that include field tablets and UAS (drones), nondestructive testing and evaluation, marine mapping and imaging, analysis and modeling tools as you support the development of our digital workflow processes. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Support project teams with general asset inventory system development, GIS systems, post processing of large data files, web development with modern web technologies, and digital data collection and workflow management efficiencies
  • Implement GIS features, including Ground Control Points (GCP) management, for accurate geospatial data processing and visualization
  • Collaborate with GIS and photogrammetry experts to define and manage workflows for handling Ground Control Points and geospatial imagery
  • Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Node.js and Python, supporting GIS and photogrammetry data processing pipelines
  • Handle geospatial data formats (e.g., GeoJSON, Shapefiles) and integrate them into interactive 3D environments
  • Utilize and optimize photogrammetry data pipelines, Scan2BIM applications, including point cloud visualization, terrain modeling, and orthomosaic generation
  • Deploy, manage, and optimize scalable applications using the Azure framework for cloud services
  • Conduct underwater and topside structural inspections in a team environment and assist in supervision of site investigations as needed
  • Perform multibeam underwater acoustic imaging operations for marine mapping services
  • Collaborate with project teams to enable or enhance workflow automations
  • Collaborate primarily with the Inspection & Rehabilitation discipline
  • Keeps informed of changing technology for both hardware and software aspects of the GIS field
  • Project leadership and mentorship while providing training and work direction to GIS staff and monitors output

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field; required. Master's degree in related field; preferred
  • Certified Commercial Diver is required; ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA, ADAS or completion of a US military equivalent diving school required
  • Strong proficiency in Python for backend services, scripting, or geospatial data processing
  • Proficiency in various programming languages, such as Java, C#, .Net, SQL, Pl/SQL, or Android SDK are preferred
  • Familiarity with geospatial data formats (e.g., GeoJSON, LAS/LAZ, Shapefiles) and GIS tools like QGIS or PostGIS
  • Proficiency in deploying, managing, and scaling applications using the Azure framework, including services like Azure Functions, Azure Storage, and Azure App Services
  • Develop and maintain front-end components using React.js, adhering to modern web development standards and best practices
  • FAA Remote Pilot Part 107 license is desired
  • Ability to work at height is preferred, along with the willingness to obtain fall protection and/or rope access certification equivalent to SPRAT
  • Boater Safety Card preferred
  • NHI certifications are desired
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver's license in good standing
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Selected candidate must consent to and a pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working conditions:

The work takes place in both the office and the field which may require occasional extended hours or weekends to meet deadlines. Inclement weather may occur.

Physical requirements:

Perform office work or attend meetings. Local and out of state travel as necessary to perform inspections or attend trainings. Must be able to navigate sites to perform inspections. This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:

  • Commercial diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength
  • Field work requires incumbent to carry heavy equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat
