Description

Brown and Caldwell (BC) has an exciting opportunity to join our Private Sector Business Unit (PSBU) as a Principal Environmental Engineer. Help us align and grow our site remediation and water practices to support our strategic growth initiatives. This includes expanding and delivering on our portfolio of work with Private Sector and Municipal Clients; advancing technical innovation; providing full lifecycle services to our clients; and supporting growth and development of our rising professionals.

As a key member of both BC's PSBU and Technical Services enterprise groups, you will work closely with our Technical Directors; National Practice Leaders, Subject Matter Experts and Specialists, and Technology Innovation Leaders; Research and Innovation (R&I) team, Treatability Testing Laboratory; and growth and project delivery leaders and teams. In this role, you will report to the PSBU Technical Director and be responsible for working collaboratively to support key pursuits and projects, conduct research, and build capabilities to win and deliver work to achieve BC's goals.

Detailed Description:



  • Support BC's Growth Strategy - Collaborate with Technical Practice and PSBU Leaders to drive our growth strategy. Understand the roles of and utilize resources, including Client Service Managers (CSMs), Client Service Teams (CSTs), technical seller doers, Subject Matter Specialists (SMS), and Portfolio Discipline Leads (PDLs), to develop and deliver solutions that resonate with our clients. Lead and coordinate treatability testing projects from initial planning to final execution and closeout ensuring high standards of quality and safety are maintained throughout the project. Develop and contribute to the internal Research and Innovation projects across practice areas. Engage with innovation teams in developing a tailored scale-up plan and communication strategy in compliance with BC's risk management policies. Support the broader R&I team by identifying and recommending improvements to the company's innovation approach.
  • Drive external visibility and brand projection - Effectively represent BC's technical brand expertise in the marketplace. Partner with Technical Service, Area Growth, and Client Service Leaders/Managers to incorporate strategic messaging; promote the expertise of our people, showcase our projects, and demonstrate our technical solutions at conferences, seminars, workshops, and client positioning meetings in alignment with BC's framework; and gain team member visibility. Engage directly with clients to gain insights and foster partnerships.
  • Drive development of opportunity portfolio based on client-specific needs and opportunities - Coordinate with operations and growth leads, CSMs, and CSTs to drive expansion of our work/sales funnel with pursuits in alignment with our technical practice strategy. Develop internal technical teams and utilize our internal technical resources to engage with the CST/client to identify opportunities and improve technical sales by increasing awareness of solutions that will resonate with our clients.
  • Bring technical expertise to leverage during BC's "Plan to Win" Process - Participate in project go/no-go decisions to maintain alignment with growth and technical strategies and resource prioritization. Engage appropriate SMS and apply BC's standards, procedures and protocols to identify efficiencies and client-centric solutions that resonate. Mentor personnel and support technical growth and increase the expertise, skills and qualification of our technical team to support current and future sales and delivery.
  • Deliver quality work on schedule and within budget that meets or exceeds clients' critical success factors - Serve as technical lead for typical projects and project tasks for larger/complex projects responsible for technical work accuracy and quality. Demonstrate critical thinking as well as accountability, collaboration, communication, self-discipline, self-development, conflict resolution, and adaptability/flexibility skills. Interpret internal or external business issues and recommend solutions/best practices. Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and provide mentoring to rising professionals or staff that are developing.


Position Breakdown:



  • Deliver Site Investigation/Remediation client projects - 40% (billable)

    • Site characterization, remedial technology
    • Treatability lab coordination


  • Deliver municipal client projects (drinking water, wastewater) - 10% (billable)

    • Treatability lab coordination


  • Research & Innovation and Treatability Testing - 40% (overhead)

    • Act as leader of R&I projects
    • Grow into role as CSM for an external funding agency such as DOE, EPA and/or DOD
    • Serve as a sounding board to BC's Treatability Testing Laboratory regarding growing/evolving services for various clients
    • Act as a connector across technical practices


  • Business Development - 10%

    • Contribute to proposal development, client presentations
    • Bring innovation to technical approaches




Desired Skills and Experience:



  • B.S. or M.S. in civil or environmental engineering or a related field
  • Professional licensing preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the environmental services, water industry and/or consulting practice
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally (verbal and written) for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to lead technical teams and mentor BC rising professionals


Salary Range:Theanticipatedstarting payrange for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and maybemore or lessdependingupon skills, experience,and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $118,000 - $161,000

Location C: $142,000 - $194,000
