SENIOR COATINGS CHEMIST

(1st Shift)

The Senior Coatings Chemist will lead the formulation, production/plant scaling support and commercialization of new or existing coatings technologies to support company objectives within Hentzen's core markets with the support of the research and development group.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develop new coatings technologies, formulate, and/or modify existing products.
  • Conduct product maintenance projects on existing products and help resolve product issues associated with manufacturing, non-conforming materials, customer complaints, and distressed or obsolete inventory, as necessary.
  • Manage day-to-day activities of direct reports, if applicable.
  • Help coach, mentor and train new employees in daily activities and provide supervision for designated personnel such as lab technicians and junior chemists.
  • Responsible for adherence to safety rules by all direct reports, promoting safe work practices, coaching and any necessary safety training required in addition to that provided by the corporate safety trainer. Also, is responsible for stopping and reporting any safety violations when observed throughout the facility.
  • Provide progress updates on assigned projects through regular written and verbal technical reports to technical director, sales, technical service, and other functional groups, as necessary.
  • Develop new test methods as necessary to accelerate the development and commercialization of new products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure success in product development and other corporate projects.
  • Document and maintain records of experiments, results and conclusions in lab notebook and other appropriate data systems.
  • Work independently on assigned projects in a deadline-oriented environment and collaborate with co-workers to provide and take directions on relevant projects.
  • Occasional travel for training, customer line trials and support (~10%)
  • As part of the housekeeping procedures, the employee may be involved with the disposal of hazardous waste. The initial training of how to properly dispose of hazardous waste will be performed by the Environmental and Safety department or the department supervisor. Annual training of the same will be performed by the EHS department.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preferred education level: BS or MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Polymer Science.
  • Preferred experience level: five plus years direct experience in an industrial manufacturing environment developing, formulating, and testing new and existing coatings technologies with background in waterborne and solvent borne coatings, including 1k and 2k urethanes, epoxies, and polyesters.
  • Demonstrated record of successful product development and technical maintenance of existing products.
  • Robust design of experiment skills and demonstrated ability to evaluate results and make product adjustments necessary to meet project objectives.
  • Must be a high energy, results driven individual with excellent communication, computer, and decision-making skills.
  • The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with proactive problem-solving skills and strong work ethic is necessary for timely completion of assigned projects.

  • Superb oral and written communication skills with the ability to work well and collaboratively with peers, leadership, and cross functional teams.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and/or hear, stand, and/or walk, use hands to finger, handle or touch objects or controls and move from place to place. The employee is regularly required to sit, balance, stoop, and occasionally reach above shoulders. The employee occasionally must use foot/feet to operate machinery, climb or balance and reach above the shoulders. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 65 lbs.

Personal Protection Equipment is required during various processes in the production area. Safety shoes, glasses, and flame-retardant uniforms are required in the production area. Respirators and ear plugs may be required when performing certain production activities.
