EMT Field Training Officer

Purpose of Job:

This position is responsible for the field training of newly hired EMTs and/or NRPs of the Emergency Medical Services department and members of the Ambulance Staff.

Job Functions:


  1. Instructs new staff on their tasks and techniques, provides written instructions, reference materials and supplies to assist in instructions given.
  2. Provides training to new staff in accordance with the Field Training Officer (FTO) program. Monitors activities in the field and provide guidance, assistance, and instruction to new staff.
  3. Make recommendations on performance/behavior issues concerning new staff.
  4. Provides technical advice and guidance to all staff on operations, patient care, charting, vehicle operation, ALS/BLS integration, and critical care concepts.
  5. Ensures new staff perform clinical care according to protocols.
  6. Assists in training and continuing education for all ambulance staff.

Minimum Education/Work Experience


  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age in order to meet Ridgeview's insurability requirements
  • 2 years of experience working for Ridgeview Emergency Medical Services Department

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities



  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and teambuilding skills


  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions


  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above


  • Ability to calculate weight and volume ratio's


  • Ability to employ discretion and confidentiality in sensitive areas


  • Ability to maintain minimum qualified certifications and a good driving record


  • Demonstrated map reading skills


  • Accessibility via phone to contact for on-call, rotating shift, weekend and holiday shifts


  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations


  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above


License/Certifications


  • Current state of MN EMT certification
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification
  • Valid MN driver's license and meets Ridgeview's insurability requirements

Preferred Qualifications


  • Resides or works in the community of Norwood Young America, Lester Prairie, Winsted, Watertown, Belle Plaine, Jordan or Gaylord.
