Overview

The Momentum Trainee program for professionals is a robust 9-month program that builds a foundation of insurance expertise through classroom learning, job shadow rotations, and on-the-job training. Momentum has launched over 180 successful and rewarding careers at Selective and that number is still growing - upon completion of the program, trainees transition to full-time roles in Underwriting, including Excess & Surplus lines, Risk Management, Accounting and more. The training kicks off in July 2025 for 8 weeks at our corporate headquarters in Branchville, NJ before trainees return to their regional offices.

Selective Insurance is hiring Risk Management Trainees for our regional office in Charlotte, NC. In this role you will learn to provide safety consulting, risk evaluation and improvement services to underwriting by the successful completion of our training which includes on-the-job, self-study, and classroom. You will acquire the skills and abilities necessary to identifying exposures with significant loss potential, investigating the cause/effect of major losses and hazards, and advising on ways to establish effective loss prevention and risk management programs.


Responsibilities

  • Develop proficiency in insurance coverage and understanding of risk factors.
  • Demonstrate aptitude in identifying and assessing risk factors for current and potential customers.
  • Learn how to assess customer needs.
  • Establish competency in building relationships with customers and agents.
  • Gain competence in collaborating with other SMS, Underwriters, Claims and Agents.
  • Develop skills necessary to prepare and present high quality oral and written loss prevention and risk management reports and plans, designed to reduce risks to agents, insureds or internal staff.
  • Develop the ability to maintain current knowledge on state-of-the-art loss prevention and risk management techniques through self-education and training programs. This includes a strong knowledge of nationally recognized codes and standards as well as appropriate state regulations.
  • Requires travel on a regular basis.
  • Participate in a corporate group project as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.
  • Demonstrated self-starter.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers/peers.
  • Must show sound, balanced and timely decision-making skills.
  • Degrees in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or Risk Management preferred but not required.
  • Achieve AINS and ARM insurance designation within 18 months of accepting position.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently to our corporate headquarters in New Jersey.

Education and Experience

  • College degree preferred.
  • Proficient in most standard business software applications, particularly Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook), Internet and HRIS.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.


Pay Range

USD $63,000.00 - USD $68,000.00 /Yr.
