Job Summary

The Per Diem Clinical Research Nurse is a professional nurse who possesses the education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert nursing care in the area of clinical research. The primary responsibilities of the Per Diem Clinical Research Nurse are the direct application of clinical expertise to study participants in the Neuroscience Clinical Research Unit. The Per Diem Clinical Research Nurse works collaboratively with the Medical Director of the NCRU, NCRU Nurse Manager, Principal Investigators, and research staff to conduct study procedures per protocol. The Per Diem Clinical Research Nurse has responsibility for maintaining quality of care standards for all procedures performed and for ensuring all clinical care meets regulatory standards for the patients participating in clinical trials. The Per Diem Clinical Research Nurse evidences self-direction, accountability, and an attention to detail.

The incumbent shall provide nursing care under the direction of the Medical Director of Neuroscience Clinical Research Unit (NCRU) and Nurse Managers for shift duties. The Nurse shall function in accordance with standardized procedures and policies. Incumbent will perform other duties as needed.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $111.29 - $144.16 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Neurosciences Clinical Research Unit (NCRU) at Mission Bay is a multi-disciplinary outpatient clinical research unit that provides state of the art research space along with nursing, phlebotomy, and imaging services to support observational and investigational research studies through the Department of Neurology

Throughout the Department of Neurology at UCSF, our mission is to deliver superb patient care, to apply state-of-the-art translational research methods to discover the causes of, and treatments for human nervous system disorders, and to educate each generation of medical students, neurology residents and postdoctoral fellows. By fostering cross-disciplinary interactions among scientists around the world, we accelerate the pace of discovery and champion the University's global health initiatives.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing with at least 6 months of clinical experience
  • Demonstrated competence in the following areas: phlebotomy, medication administration, IV insertion, EKG, medication administration (i.e. IV therapy, IM, SQ injections), excellent communication skills, leadership/problem identification/resolution, precise documentation, and teaching of patients, families, staff and colleagues
  • At least one year experience in neuroscience specialty unit or at least one year experience in clinical research environment
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients with behavioral and cognitive disorders and their families
  • Demonstrated experience working independently as a nurse and exercising independent clinical judgment.
  • Ability to escalate significant adverse changes or clinical findings through appropriate chain of command
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks with competing deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Competence in the use of PC compatible software including MS Office, proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook

Preferred Qualifications


  • Recent experience in clinical research (i.e. FDA clinical trials experience)
  • In-depth knowledge of neurological conditions and an understanding of neurodegenerative conditions (i.e. Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, multiple sclerosis)
  • Documented training on Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Knowledge of University guidelines, IRB/CHR requirements

License/Certification


  • Current California RN license: Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Current American Heart Association BLS
