Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION(S):

Create and teach an academically rigorous 2-week, half-day course in the Creative Writing Workshop (CWW) for students entering 9th-12th grades between July 7th - July 18th, 2025. Actively participate in program training and team collaboration. Provide training and oversight for an undergraduate Classroom Assistant.This position is temporary, non-benefitted, and in person for the duration of the program and at least 1-2 Classroom Assistant training days. The salary is a $2600 stipend.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prior to the program:

  • Design a creative writing course that is compelling and at the appropriate level for high school students seeking a college-level course. Introduce students to exemplary writing in the genre and teach them how to analyze elements of craft rather than literary analysis.

  • Generate a course description, biography, and photo for the website and other marketing.

  • Lead a Classroom Assistant in approximately 4 hours of academic training from June 25-27, 2025. This includes at least 1-2 on-site meetings with CA.

  • Participate in faculty orientation and training (3 virtual and in-person-encouraged meetings between March-May of approximately 2-3 hours each).

  • Complete all pre-orientation training and paperwork, including training to engage with minors and other paperwork related to working with students under 18.

  • Maintain clear, ongoing communication with the CWW Academic Director and Precollege staff.

During the program:

  • Teach one course (15 students; 2 weeks; Monday, July 7 - Friday, July 18; half day- 9am-12pm or 1pm-4pm).

  • Teach a writing-focused course during the first week, giving students the time to generate new work, while learning elements of craft - avoid extensive lecturing.

  • Conduct a workshop the second week to ensure that each student has at least one piece reviewed by the instructor and the class.

  • Incorporate diverse elements to make a dynamic and engaging classroom experience.

  • Use clear, ongoing communication and collaboration with the Classroom Assistant.

  • Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom, keeping equity at the forefront of the pedagogy.

  • Communicate with Peter Sapira about any student classroom concerns.

After the program:

  • Write recommendations for each student in the class.

  • Meet with the Academic Director to debrief program experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Candidates must have published works in the genre of the class they will teach. Experience working with teens is preferred. Experience teaching in a workshop setting is strongly preferred.

  • Health profile and required immunizations (all health information is kept confidential)
