Position Summary |
The primary responsibility of this position is to assist with the day to day work required to maintain a research herd of beef cattle. Responsibilities include assisting with day to day animal husbandry tasks, handling animals in support of research protocols, fence construction and maintenance, haymaking, etc. In addition to these responsibilities, the position also has some measure of responsibility assisting in row-crop production and management. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- General understanding of the scientific method as it applies to agricultural research.
- Working knowledge of livestock production in the southern piedmont.
- Proficient at working safely in the presence of beef cattle in a confined space, and understand the basic principles of animal handling in confined spaces; i.e. flight zones, etc.
- Working knowledge of row-crop systems in the southern piedmont.
- Basic understanding of precision ag. technologies and their application to agricultural production practices in the southern piedmont.
- Understanding of basic mechanical principles and their application to agriculture. The applicant will perform many types of farm tasks independently and with a minimum of supervision including but not limited to: ensuring the health and well-being of the research beef herd, operating agricultural equipment including hay-making tools, rotary mowers, sprayers, trucks/trailers, etc.

Assist Farm Manager with daily duties as they pertain to the maintenance of a beef cattle herd including but not limited to: feeding hay and grain, daily checks of herds, administering regular vaccinations, rotating animals through pastures, administering various treatments as dictated by research needs. |

Support row crop research including but not limited to field preparation, planting, and maintenance during growing season and harvest to include soil sampling and forage sampling. Maintain overall appearance of research plot areas. Maintain, service, and repair (including fabrication) agricultural equipment, keep detailed records of such, maintain shop area, and other duties as assigned. |
