Position: Sr. Fire Protection and Mechanical Design Engineer

Reports To: Director of Project Management

Location: Ft. Stewart, GA and Hunter Army Airfield, GA (on-site)

Job Summary:

Serve as a Senior Fire Protection, Mechanical, and Plumbing Designer supporting the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) at Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Lead the design of fire protection systems (wet and dry pipe), HVAC, and plumbing systems for new construction and renovation projects. Responsibilities include conducting load calculations, preparing equipment designs and layouts, and ensuring all design products adhere to safety rules, government criteria, and building codes (e.g., NFPA, International Fire Code, Unified Facilities Criteria). Collaborate with technical managers, stakeholders, and project teams to deliver integrated, high-quality design solutions that meet government requirements.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Deliver complete, executable design products related to fire protection, mechanical, and plumbing systems. Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, including NFPA, International Fire Code, and Unified Facilities Criteria.





  • Conduct field verification of existing site conditions to assess engineering design challenges and incorporate site-specific constraints into design solutions.





  • Provide detailed specifications and cost estimates for materials and labor, ensuring adherence to applicable codes and standards for complex projects.





  • Collaborate with Technical Managers, fire departments, public safety officials, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are integrated, complete, and meet all requirements.





  • Review technical criteria and feedback to verify that completed designs meet project scope, function as intended, and comply with all contract requirements.





  • Proactively identify and resolve significant technical and engineering challenges through coordination with relevant parties.





  • Produce and deliver comprehensive design packages, including plans, specifications, and estimates, ensuring successful project execution.





  • Coordinate with government contracting officers and DPW staff to ensure timely project delivery.





  • Ensure all design activities and products adhere to applicable safety regulations, building codes, and project requirements.





  • Review and ensure compliance with safety regulations, including OSHA standards, as part of the design process.





  • Participate in any required training programs to maintain compliance and expertise, as outlined in the project requirements.





  • Travel between Ft. Stewart, GA, and Hunter Army Airfield, GA, as required to support project needs.





Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment and occasionally outdoors on construction sites for field visits. The role routinely requires the use of standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and printers. Fieldwork may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, construction hazards, and active work environments.

Appearance:

Business casual attire is required for office work. Field visits may require long pants, closed-toe shoes, and PPE as necessary to ensure safety.

Physical Demands:

Periodic standing, walking, and climbing stairs during site visits. Occasional lifting or moving of items weighing up to 20 pounds. Adherence to safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during fieldwork.

Minimum Qualifications:




  • Bachelor of Science degree from accredited school of Engineering or Engineering Technology





  • Minimum of 4 years of practical experience in fire protection, mechanical, or plumbing system design for government or commercial construction and renovation projects





  • At least 2 years of experience leading projects from start to finish, including planning, design, and execution, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.





  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design tools required.





  • Strong knowledge of NFPA standards, OSHA safety guidelines, International Fire Code, Unified Facilities Criteria, or similar regulations is required.





  • Ability to pass government background check and security screening.
