General Pet Supply, a division of Central Pet & Garden Co. is currently seeking a Transportation Manager at our facility in Milwaukee, WI.

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for overseeing all facets of the delivery process including managing daily delivery routes, driver training and scheduling to ensure accurate, on-time and damage-free delivery of products, in the most cost-effective manner. This is a working supervisor position and requires the individual to ride with drivers to observe their performance, evaluate delivery routes and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Develop, implement, and administer policies, procedures, and controls for the delivery of out-bound products in an accurate, timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Hire, train, develop, evaluate, and discipline delivery personnel. This includes planning, scheduling personnel, monitoring employee workloads, documenting employee performance and conducting performance reviews to fit operational needs. Also includes enforcing and abiding by Company policies and procedures. Will inform the HR Department of problems as they arise.
  • Regular communication with delivery team regarding process or procedure changes, route, customer, delivery, or vehicle issues, scheduling changes, promotions, etc.
  • Communicate with the Operations Manager any issues regarding deliveries, customers or vehicles that may affect the delivery schedule, customer service or departmental costs.
  • Ensure operations are compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including the Department of Transportation. This includes maintaining driver logs, pre-trip inspections, daily trip records, fuel receipts, vehicle maintenance records and Driver Qualification files.
  • Prepare and post Weekly Route Delivery schedule which includes driver and vehicle assignments.
  • Complete daily routing of General Pet and Hills Pet Nutrition customer orders and adjust the delivery schedule for drivers and vehicles based on load size and driver availability.
  • Take incoming calls from drivers, customers, Hills, Sales and Customer Care regarding delivery or service issues, and develop an action plan to resolve the problem.
  • Review new accounts (General Pet & Hills) and assign them to a delivery route and a stop number.
  • Coordinate vendor pickups, utilizing General Pet delivery trucks, for vendors who are located within the General Pet delivery territory.
  • Coordinate special deliveries with other supervisors or departments and schedule the delivery.
  • Work with truck Lease Company regarding vehicle maintenance issues, and coordination of substitute or rental vehicles as needed.
  • Structure delivery routes to maximize efficiencies and minimize expenses.
  • Establish holiday delivery schedules; including route cancellations, special deliveries, and creating flyers to be distributed to customers.
  • Ensure timesheets for hourly personnel are accurate and complete prior to payroll processing.
  • Work with outside vendors on maintenance and purchases to control costs.
  • Promote a safe and efficient work environment delivery team. This includes completion of vehicle and worker's comp. accident reports, conducting accident investigation, and developing corrective action plans to eliminate or reduce safety issues. Conduct quarterly driver safety meetings.
  • Ride with drivers on delivery routes to evaluate driver performance and route efficiency.
  • Regular attendance and onsite presence.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
  • Associates Degree in business, warehouse management, logistics or operations, or four years of experience in a warehouse or logistics environment.
  • One (1) year previous supervisory experience, including training, development, and evaluation of delivery drivers.
  • Must have strong understanding of DOT guidelines and experience working with leased or owned vehicles. Extensive experience working with Common Carriers and UPS is a plus.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, including previous experience working with Warehouse and Transportation Management Systems.
  • Excellent analytical and planning skills. Able to plan and be proactive to prevent time spent reacting to problems.
  • Must be familiar with, understand, abide by, and enforce all Company policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to operate basic office equipment including telephones, copy machine, fax machine and computer (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, MapPoint and Verizon Connect/Routing Software).
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and supervision skills to aid in the development, direction, delegation, and discipline of staff. Must be understanding of people and their problems, diplomatic and have a sense of fairness and consistency.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written format. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and adjust work hours to meet changing customer or operational demands, and able to work overtime on short notice. Position requires working until the job is complete.
  • Must be an excellent problem-solver, organized and attentive to detail.
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of all delivery positions.
  • Must be willing and able to travel on routes with drivers, including overnight routes.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
  • Experience in a fast-paced distribution environment.
  • Previous forklift certification.
  • Valid class A commercial driver's license and previous delivery experience.
  • Previous routing experience.
  • Able to safely operate and become certified in the operation of all warehouse equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks and shrink wrap machines.
