There is an exciting career opportunity available for a Supervisor, Animal Care. The Supervisor, Animal Care is responsible, day-to-day, for the output, shipment, animal welfare, product, environmental quality, supplies logistics, work scheduling, training and performance management of an assigned team of operating personnel within an individual animal care room or work area. The incumbent is responsible to see that all colonies assigned to their team are properly maintained, that standard operating and safety procedures are followed and that the work area presents a disciplined, attractive and congenial working environment. The incumbent is expected to possess in-depth knowledge and familiarity with all operating requirements and procedures of the animal room or work area sufficient to oversee and provide guidance to trained personnel and to offer training and counsel to staff in training. The incumbent is typically responsible for up to 24 technicians, technologists, trainees and trainers and up to 3,500 breeding cages and 900 inventory boxes; the number of strains will vary in number and complexity with technical program from a minimum of 5-12 inbred strains to a maximum of several hundred mutant and or research strains. Depending upon the size and varying programs of the individual barrier to which the incumbent is assigned, the incumbent may be required to coordinate activities with one or more other Animal Care Supervisors, PIs and/or Research Assistants assigned to the same work area. Coordination or oversight of activities or special events will occasionally occur during non-standard business hours. Critical elements of successful performance include effective leadership, training and development of assigned staff, meeting product quality specifications and advising and assisting the Animal Care Manager in the development and implementation of colony management and/or work flow strategies to maximize productivity and output as well as the safety performance of their assigned team.
