Pharmacy Technician I

Assists the Pharmacist in preparing and distributing medications to patients. Performs designated technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
Experience
  • 6 months of retail or hospital experience or a diploma from an approved pharmacy technician training program required
Licenses and Certifications
  • DC DOH - Pharmacy Technician Registration required
  • PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or equivalent national certification within 180 Days required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires ability to read and write, knowledge of grammar, medical terminology, and proficiency in basic mathematics, including fractions and decimals, and keyboard skills.
  • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, and sterilizing equipment); the preparation, comparison, or checking of reports, records, and related data; and the basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
  • Consistently fulfills all the responsibilities of the Pharmacy Material Handler.
  • Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepares oral and topical medications for dispensing to patients, including the selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals, and filling of medication carts.
  • Assists patients, nurses, physicians, and others with medication order requests and pharmacy related needs.
  • Monitors stock inventory levels and medication expiration dates for pharmacy areas and replenishes medications as needed. Conducts monthly/periodic inspections of patient care/department areas.
  • Pulls, fills, and replaces medications in the automated medication dispensing machines and transports to appropriate nursing unit(s). Services the Pyxis machines as needed
  • Performs hourly or more frequent deliveries and retrieves medications, including narcotics, and pharmacy supplies to/from patient care and satellite pharmacy areas based on patient care needs.
  • Repackages individual unit-of-use packaging, when not otherwise available.
  • Loads and unloads the TUG and restocks medications in the store room as needed. Empties the TUG and resends as needed. Logs all TUG related issues.
  • Completes and maintains relevant controlled substance inventory logs/records.
  • Exchanges medication carts and the IV batch, and recycles all in-date medications. Disposes of all expired medications based on departmental policy.
