Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Auxiliary Services provides a variety of services and products in a convenient and customer-oriented manner to enhance the quality of campus life for student, faculty, staff, and visitors. These services include Armored Car, Carolina Dining Services, Carolina Managed Print Services, Laundry,
PID Office, Print Stop Printing, Student Store,
UNC One Card Office, University Mail Services, and Vending. The primary purpose of the Department is to provide mailing services to the University Campus Departments, Faculty and Staff. University Mail Services picks-up, sorts and delivers to the entire campus as well as to several off-campus locations United States Postal Service Mail daily.
UNC Mail Services also processes (applies postage) to outgoing mail for the university campus departments, faculty, and staff daily. |
Position Summary |
The Route Driver sorts and delivers incoming campus mail to designated campus boxes. Duties include performing the following tasks twice daily: sorting incoming mail and packages according to campus boxes, loading their vehicle with the mail for the designated campus box numbers on their particular route, and delivering the mail to the location in the building set-aside for mail acceptance. This position will also pick up outgoing mail and packages to deliver them to the Mail Processing area at
UNC Mail Services for metering.
Other responsibilities include learning multiple routes on campus, metering mail, operating multiple vehicles, as well as other duties as assigned by the Mail Supervisor and Mail Director.
The Route Driver operates the Mail Vehicle in a safe, competent manner, obeying all traffic laws and reporting any accidents or vehicle service issues to the supervisor according to established procedures. The Route Driver must maintain a valid NC Driver's License. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to read, write, and understand written or verbal instruction, work orders, and other job materials. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
Strong attention-to-detail and organizational skills. Excellent verbal communication skills.
A valid North Carolina Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one prior to start date, is required. Must be able to operate a state vehicle in a safe, competent manner, obeying all traffic laws, and reporting any accidents to supervisor according to established procedure. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Background in performing delivery of materials on an assigned route with customer interaction, knowledge of United States Post Office policies and procedures, proven history of working in a successful team environment, and an excellent driving record. |
Required Licenses/Certifications |
A valid NC Driver's License. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Work is routine and repetitive in nature and may require strenuous physical exertion. Applicants must be able to move objects weighing up to 30 lbs., maneuver postal carts weighing up to 200 pounds, and drive a 12-foot box truck. Employees are required to adhere to safety requirements by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. |
