PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SONOGRAPHER

JOB SUMMARY SEIU 73 HLT HOSP TECHNOLGTS

Under the direction of the Head of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology, performs echocardiographic procedures to examine all aspects of the human heart and identifying signs of common and complex heart diseases. Follows all policy and procedures according to the standards set by the Echocardiography Laboratory. Requires on-call duty rotation, nights, and weekends; fulfills requests to return to site to perform urgent studies.

Typical Duties




  • * Performs echocardiographic procedures to examine all aspects of the human heart and identifying signs of common and complex heart diseases.

    * Obtains image and Doppler information required to define complex congenital heart disorders for patients referred for evaluation of non-corrected anatomy and function and/or evaluation of surgical reconstruction or repair.

    * Collects data and provides timely preliminary report of findings for patients referred for evaluation of suspected or known congenital and/or acquired heart disease; works with a wide variety of patients including fetuses, premature infants, neonates, children, adolescents, and adults.

    * Prepares detailed reports and findings in support of physician/cardiologist interpretation to diagnose and screen medical conditions; follows standards set by the Echocardiography Laboratory.

    * Deciphers the correlation of findings with reported or anticipated results from prior fetal echo studies.

    * Assists Pediatric Cardiologist and physicians with interventional procedures requiring ultrasound guidance as requested.

    * Provides care in a manner consistent with the patient's needs and other special considerations.

    * Schedules and performs echocardiograms as needed.

    * Maintains the confidentiality of the patient protected health information (PHI).

    * Ensures equipment is in optimum condition; notifies appropriate personnel when equipment requires servicing or is damaged; cleans, sanitizes, and checks all echocardiogram equipment before and after each use.

    * Prepares echocardiography materials for case conferences, CQI meetings, research, and educational presentations.

    * Maintains knowledge and understanding of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, tissue characteristics and measurements of blood flow.

    * Remains current with certifications and educational requirements.

    * Requires on-call duty rotation, nights, and weekends; fulfills requests to return to site to perform urgent studies.



Minimum Qualifications

* Certified as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)

* Three (3) years of experience performing Pediatrics and Neonatal Echocardiograms

* Must be able to work an on-call duty rotation, nights and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

* Associate's degree or equivalent in Cardiovascular Technology

* Five (5) years of experience in Echocardiography in Adult and Pediatrics

* Skills to perform fetal ultrasounds

MUST MEET ALL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION FILING.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

* Advanced knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, physiology and pathology of the heart (adult and pediatric)

* Knowledge and understanding of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, tissue characteristics and measurements of blood flow

* Knowledge of digital systems and capable of preparing preliminary reports

* Knowledge of medical terminology

* Familiar with PHI and HIPPA requirements

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups

* Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

* Demonstrate compassion and empathy

Demonstrate analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills

Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and precision

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
