I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Development and Alumni Relations ( DAR) Division seeks an Assistant Vice President, Annual Giving. DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients, and friends. Our goal is to advance GW's mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

The GW Office of Alumni Relations meets the university's needs by raising funds that have an immediate impact. With a focus on increasing alumni participation rates, the team employs direct marketing best practices, innovative digital and personal outreach strategies, and front-line fundraising efforts to build a base of support for the university.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Assistant Vice President will be responsible for the successful implementation of the Alumni Relations program and serves as the head of the alumni relations operations.

The incumbent will be a champion for the user experience in the design and development of all alumni relations fundraising strategies. This strategy should inspire year to year support from alumni, families and friends of GW and must be multi-channel, personalized, dynamic, and integrated within all the schools, colleges and athletics. The strategy must feed the pipeline for major gifts and assist in growing annual attainment. Multiple channels and innovative platforms must be utilized in deploying the strategy and should focus on GW's current and emerging strengths.

The Assistant Vice President of Alumni Relations will:


  • Lead Strategic Planning for Alumni Relations: Oversee the development and execution of short- and long-term strategies to achieve the university's alumni relations engagement goals with a focus on creating a pipeline for future donors.

  • Oversee Alumni Relations Operations: Manage aspects of alumni relations, including but not limited to regional and affinity networks, campus engagement, career and industry programs, and multigenerational engagement, ensuring coordination across programs and consistent performance against defined goals.

  • Utilize Engagement to Assist in Donor Pipeline Development: Oversee the engagement of alumni to grow the prospective donors who can move the pipeline from broad-based annual giving, leadership giving, and passing leads seamlessly to the major gifts team for further engagement.

  • Supervise and Mentor a Team of Alumni Relations Professionals: Lead, guide, and provide ongoing mentorship to a team of direct and indirect reports, ensuring their success in executing alumni engagement strategies.

  • Alumni Portfolio Management: Manage an engagement portfolio of potential leadership and major gift prospects, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

  • Innovate and Adapt the Use of the Alumni Engagement Score: Continuously develop and implement innovative strategies and methodologies to utilize the alumni engagement score to leverage data, staying atop of industry trends and emerging technologies.

  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with university leadership, annual giving, donor relations, family philanthropy, and other teams to align messaging, goals, and engagement efforts across departments.

  • Analyze and Report on Engagement Performance: Consistently track, analyze, and report on key performance indicators, including AES metrics, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership.

  • Develop a Culture of Lifelong Philanthropy Among Alumni: Assist in initiatives to promote a culture of philanthropy among alumni, ensuring alumni programming supports alumni donor count.

  • Execute and Lead University-wide Engagement Programs: Oversee all-campus and all-constituency engagement programs such as Alumni and Families Weekend and regional all-calls, ensuring alignment with broader university priorities.

  • Foster Key Partnerships Across Campus: Build successful partnerships with key stakeholders across campus, including but not limited to Athletics, Enrollment, Career Services, Human Resources, and other academic and administrative departments, ensuring engagement goals align with institutional priorities.

  • Represent the University as a Thought Leader: Serve as an industry thought leader and advocate for the university's alumni engagement vision at national conferences, while continuously enhancing your professional knowledge and leadership profile.


This is the top alumni relations position at the university. This position oversees the strategy and execution of university-wide alumni relation program, while providing leadership to the alumni relations team, including indirect reports in the schools and center. This position focuses enhancing philanthropic engagement across the constituencies by increasing giving participation and fostering the growth of donor pipelines, particularly through digital and web streams. This role is encouraged to engage best practices as part of the overall program and must evaluate results of all aspects of it as it relates to ROI. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs. This is a single incumbent position with enterprise-wide scope.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 9 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 7 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience in higher education alumni engagement in complex institutions, including an understanding of the use of the alumni engagement score.
  • Strong leadership, management, and program administration skills with demonstrated ability to set goals and drive implementation in highly decentralized organizational context. The ability to establish clear objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate staff and volunteer leaders to achieve both short- and long-term goals.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with a sense of urgency and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in an environment where working across boundaries and leveraging strengths are necessary. A creative approach to problem-solving and the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
  • Demonstrated facility with analytics and data-informed planning. A preference for familiarity with advancement enabling models, designs, technologies, or systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and a capacity to engage, inspire, and persuade faculty, University administrators, officers, volunteers, donors, prospects, and staff, both within the University and beyond. These skills should be combined with the ability to make the appropriate connections among members of these groups and to nurture strong and long-lasting institutional relationships.
  • A high level of energy, a positive "can-do" attitude, and the ability to function at peak levels in a high expectation environment.
  • A team-building orientation with a commitment to a non-hierarchical approach to organization and the willingness to empower subordinates to get the job done while providing the support and advocacy they need. A history of recruiting and developing exceptional people.

Hiring Range $159,858.19 - $223,754.49
