Position Summary The University of New Mexico The UNM College of Education and Human Sciences, comprised of five academic departments, is a future-oriented, dynamic professional school organized to reflect the following values: Advocacy, Building Professional Identities, Collaboration, Building Strong School/University Partnerships, Diversity and Social Justice, Interdisciplinary Inquiry/Scholarship, and Teaching and Learning. The TEELP Department is the largest in the College with the uniqueness of having teacher education and educational leadership faculty addressing Pre-K-12 and higher education needs together as an academic unit. The Department has both undergraduate and graduate programs. The Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies (LLSS) Department focuses on educational issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion through the study of the social and political contexts of education; scholarly inquiry using qualitative, critical, and innovative research methodologies; valuing differences as sources of leadership and expertise; and promoting and creating a community of educators devoted to social justice. The proposed Secondary Literacy position seeks a candidate who can situate literacy within the current social and political contexts of education, engages in inquiry using qualitative, critical, and innovative research methodologies, and can articulate the differences of class, race, ethnicity, language, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and age. Furthermore, the candidate has a firm understanding of foundational linguistic knowledge and principles as well as decolonizing, emancipatory and liberatory literacies. Responsibilities: The tenure-line faculty member will teach undergraduate, master's and doctoral students in TEELP and/or LLSS in accordance with the department's approved workload policy. Other responsibilities include developing an active research agenda, advising master's and doctoral; chairing and/or serving on inquiry projects, master's exams, theses, and doctoral dissertation committees; serving on department and university committees; and contributing to program partnerships and initiatives. Qualifications Minimum requirements:
* Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Reading/Literacy Education, English Education, language literacy and sociocultural studies with specialization in literacy, and/or a closely related field. All requirements for the doctorate must have been completed by the time of the start date of the appointment.
* Minimum of three years of successful experience as a Secondary educator (6-12) in urban, rural, or high need districts.
* Evidence of research in the area of Secondary Reading/Literacy education, or related field.
* Certification in or willingness to be trained in the science of reading (or a reading endorsement).
* Experience with a variety of course delivery methods.
Preferred requirements:
* Minimum of five (5) years of experience teaching in the content area in public secondary (grades 6-12) schools in urban, rural, or high need districts.
* Demonstrated commitment and experience with diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success. As well as working with broadly diverse, multilingual youth and communities.
* Evidence of excellence or potential for excellence in teaching courses in Secondary Reading/Literacy education, English Language Arts methods, or related.
* Approaches literacy in teaching from a multilingual perspective and considers the ways in which literacies live and are enacted in racialized bodies, politicized educational spaces, and/or diverse communities.
* Evidence of excellence or potential for excellence in research in Reading/Literacy, English education or related.
* Ability to propose and develop innovative courses and programs that support professional learning for teachers around literacy that would also be embraced as relevant and timely for the Peoples of New Mexico.
* Potential for leadership within the institution, community settings, and/or within state and national organizations.
* Experience with or knowledge of education in urban and/or rural and Indigenous settings.
