Outsourced Quality Technician

Basic Function

Coordinates among Product Development, Quality Assurance, and Supply Chain to oversee the production part approval process (PPAP) for both new product development and resourced in-line products and components.

Organizational Relationships

Reports directly to the Director of Quality - Bernhardt Design. Works closely with managers and staff at various levels within the Design, Supply Chain, Quality and Asian Sourcing departments.

Specific Responsibilities

Develops and maintains a general understanding of key commodities (wood, aluminum, stainless steel, plastics, and foam) within the context of manufacturing process, quality expectations and acceptable tolerances. Also develops a comprehensive understanding of PPAP and PDIP processes, quality inspection best practices and measurement/evaluation methods and tools.

Specifically, this position will:

  • Work hand in hand with Product Development during the development process to get a better understanding of the products and in the creation and review of the 1Factory document set. This includes the drawings and information that goes into the document set. (this could be 20% of your time)
  • Develops and implements any necessary documentation for an effective Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for Bernhardt Design.
  • With designers and engineers, translates product attributes and designs into Quality Specifications and Quality Control Requirements (QCRs) for outsourced components, both during new product development and resourcing.
  • Coordinates PPAP meetings with Product Development, Quality, Supply Chain and Asian Sourcing teams to review and finalize Specifications/QCRs.
  • Project Manages PPAP process for all outsourced components to ensure documentation is clear and accurate, and that the PPAP process is followed by all parties in an orderly and timely manner.
  • Coordinates with relevant parties when there are errors, delays, or quality/engineering issues during the PPAP process.
  • Creates Corrective Action Reports and recommendations to suppliers when issues are discovered. This includes the follow up to ensure that the suppliers respond with their documented corrective actions for the next production order.
  • Operates or overseas the operation of the Digital 3D Scanner for quality inspections as well the creation of new models based on the scanned items.
  • Have the ability to use Pro-Engineer Creo or SolidWorks to create new 3D models of scanned components.
  • With Director of Quality, determines appropriate inspection criteria for outsourced components throughout PPAP process and initial production orders.


  • Keeps organized and easily accessible files with all documentation for reference during and after initial development.
  • Future international travel may be required in the future to troubleshoot issues with our overseas suppliers.



Necessary Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have or be able to get a US Passport.
  • Positive personality and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized and an attention to detail.
  • Understanding of the Production Part Approval Processes (PPAP), quality systems and best practices regarding inspection criteria and procedures.
  • Strong PC computing abilities with various formats.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD modeling and various CAD platforms
  • Knowledge of material types and applications, such as metal, wood, and plastic.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial design, furniture design or closely related field of study, or equivalent experience.


Authority

The Quality PPAP Coordinator is authorized to take any reasonable action necessary to maintain effective operations within the parameters of his/her position description. These actions must be in accordance with the Bernhardt Policy Manual and other established policies and practices. Actions are subject to general or specific authority limitations as established by the Director of Quality - Bernhardt Design.
