Sociology studies societies and human groups: their composition, organization, culture, and development. It combines scientific and humanistic methods to investigate a subject that is both relevant and broad-ranging from social interaction in everyday life to social changes taking place on a global scale. UCSD's Department of Sociology offers an innovative undergraduate program that covers the breadth of the discipline while giving students opportunities to specialize in areas of their choice, to conduct independent research, and to participate in an Honors Program. The department also encourages students to study abroad and to take courses in other humanities and social science departments in order to expand their perspective on sociological topics.

The Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Sociology is responsible for all aspects of the department graduate program which consists of approximately 55 registered and 20 unregistered graduate students. Responsibilities include counseling students; analyzing, interpreting and implementing departmental and university broadly defined policies; participating as a member of the department Graduate Program Committee, Graduate Admissions Committee, and Teaching & Scheduling Committee; and coordinating publicity for the graduate program in various venues. The Graduate Coordinator maintains admission, financial, and program files on all graduate students and serves as the liaison between the department and Graduate Division, campuswide graduate student affairs units/departments, and the community. They make recommendations to the Chair, MSO, Graduate Program Director, Graduate Program Committee, Graduate Admissions Committee and Science Studies Program Advisor on matters related to Sociology Graduate Affairs.
