Main position objectives

The Research and Development (R&D) engineer is responsible for designing and developing new products, services, and processes related to polymer manufacturing equipment. Integral to the development of new products, they will work on projects to increase product performance, reduce costs, reduce environmental impact, and support a highly diverse customer base. This individual will work closely with Product Management, Sales, Technical Service, and Manufacturing, to support the innovation and improvement of over 5 product lines to include, but not limited to, Die Plates, Dryers, Filtration, Pulverizers, and Tempered Water Systems.

What You'll Do:

Understand and hold paramount the needs of the end user to develop and improve new and existing products within Maag Americas Centers of Excellence (COE's): Die Plates, Dryers, Large Area Filtration, Pulverizers, Tempered Water Systems.

  • Perform product development steps as assigned, based on project complexity, including, but not limited to
    • Project Management: schedule management, budget tracking, Risk Assessment and Mitigation Plans (RAMP)
    • Concept Generation: concept down-selection, prototyping, establishing customer needs and engineering characteristics
    • Product Development: engineering design reviews, design life and safety calculations/simulations, Design For Manufacturability (DFM), Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE), manufacturing support (fixture/jig design), performance validation
    • Product Launch: technical product presentations, commercial literature review, generate production documentation (Models, drawings, Bill Of Materials (BOM), product compliance proofs)
  • Develop testing plans and execute tests to investigate first principles, evaluate proof of concept (PoC) designs, and validate new/existing products
  • Engage in activities aimed at exploring opportunities for innovation with an open mind and willingness to consider the impossible
  • Stay up-to-date on technological advancements in the polymer and manufacturing fields while actively looking for opportunities to improve products and processes
  • Collaborate with global teams to ensure seamless integration with adjacent Maag equipment
  • Execute day-to-day engineering functions, such as 3D modeling, drafting, interact with ERP and Product management software, write Engineering Change Orders (ECN), etc.

The incumbent considers all interests of quality, accident prevention, and occupational safety as well as environmental safety in a preventive manner within their scope of responsibility and supports the avoidance of damages to people, facilities, assets, material and environment actively.

What You'd Bring:

Required

3+ years Solid Works or similar CAD system

Desirable

  • 5+ years' experience in design related field such as R&D, applications, or manufacturing
  • Experience in plastics processing equipment is highly desirable
  • Experience in Experimental Design (DoE) is highly desirable
  • Exposure to global safety regulations applicable to product compliance (i.e. CE, ATEX, NR-12)
  • Experience using measuring / test equipment, including micrometers, multi-meters, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's)

Education

Required:

BS in Mechanical Engineering (or Associates degree in engineering technology with 7+ year of experience in an applicable field)

Desirable

  • Basic-advanced material science knowledge specific to metals and polymers
  • Understanding of metals and their manufacturing processes: forming, machining, welding, brazing
  • Understanding of mechatronics, Industry 4.0, and IoT principal integration
  • Multilingual (German preferred)
