Senior Consultant, Staff Engagement

General Summary/Purpose

Reporting to the Executive Director of HR Strategic Initiatives, the Staff Engagement Consultant will play a critical role in shaping and implementing staff engagement strategies across the institution. This position will be instrumental in ensuring that staff engagement is thoughtfully integrated into the creation, execution, and continuous improvement of HR programs and initiatives. The Staff Engagement Consultant will work collaboratively across departments to align engagement efforts with institutional goals, particularly JHU's Ten for One strategic plan and the Roadmap on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

  • Develop and execute strategies to implement programs aligned withJHU's Second Roadmap for Diversityand theTen for OneInitiative.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to JHU Staff Advisory Council (SAC) , ensuring alignment with divisional staff groups. This includes acting as a consultant to the SAC in the development and execution of work plans, administration of nomination and election processes, overseeing document preparation for leadership review, procuring Subject Matter Expert (SME) support of subcommittee work, and liaising between the SAC and JHU leadership as appropriate.
  • Develop recognition and rewards programs to celebrate employee achievements, milestones, and contributions. This includes the design of awards, selection processes and criteria, and procurement of awards for recipients,
  • Collaborate with institutional leadership to ensure alignment between engagement strategies and the university's overarching goals and initiatives.
  • Lead the development and implementation of staff engagement surveys, focus groups, and other tools to measure organizational climate and culture. This could include collaborating with 3rd party vendors and experts.
  • Create metrics and dashboards to track engagement, retention, and satisfaction rates, presenting data-driven insights to leadership.
  • Partner with Learning & Development to incorporate engagement strategies into staff development programs and leadership training.
  • Collaborate with divisional HR Leadership to support localized engagement plans tailored to the specific needs of different staff groups.
  • Advocate for and ensure diverse staff voices are represented in decision-making processes, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive workplace.
  • Work with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to develop strategies supporting resource and affinity groups.
  • Develop and support strategies surrounding staff onboarding initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and drive initiatives from conception through completion.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across various levels of the organization.
  • Experience in survey design, creation, administration, and data analytics, as well as facilitation skills for focus groups and other group settings
  • Analytical mindset, capable of leveraging data to assess program effectiveness and make data-driven recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to navigate complex organizational structures.
  • Familiarity with HR programs, policies, and practices, including experience with staff development, retention, and engagement strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead training sessions and workshops.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
  • Ability to plan and think strategically and possess excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to establish priorities, make independent decisions, and use independent judgment
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to plan and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, while achieving pre-determined milestones and completion deadlines
  • Must possess skills to convey complex ideas to non-technical audiences the skills to convey information to faculty, staff and University officials, especially the ability to put complex information into effective PowerPoint and other communications tools for various audiences.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Human Resources, Organization Development, Staff Engagement, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in developing and implementing staff engagement strategies.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Experience in higher education or a similarly complex, large organization is highly preferred.
  • Certification in human resources (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR) is a plus.
