Position description

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine is recruiting for a full-time Junior Specialist in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

The Junior Specialist has the general duties of working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in the planning and execution of a research project. The Junior Specialist may assist in data collection, entry and quality control, study design and implementation, literature reviews and data analysis for preparation of manuscripts or conference presentations, and writing conference abstracts and manuscripts (e.g., methods and results sections, table, and figure generation) for a particular project. The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Joaquin Lado and work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.

I. RESEARCH (90% Effort) The incumbent will collaborate with other research personnel affiliated with research activities involving cell line manipulation, gene expression and cloning, protein-protein interaction, and manipulation of small and large animal experimental models. The Junior Specialist will perform technical/routine lab activities and may perform experiments under the supervision of the PI. Specific duties include: 1. Familiarize himself/herself with the current state of knowledge in the field by reading background literature, including that suggested by the supervisors and relevant independent study. 2. Understand the rationale and hypotheses being tested. 3. Discuss experimental design prior to performing experiments with the supervisors. 4. Once trained, work independently for basic techniques and protocols.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (5% Effort) The appointee will be expected to actively participate in the dissemination of information at the professional/technical societies or groups (beyond the boundaries of the campus) meetings, participate and contribute to departmental and other seminars, journal clubs and other activities, as applicable.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% Effort) The Junior Specialist may be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, committee service, and other activities, as applicable.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year with the possibility to extend to two years maximum. 100% appointment.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor's degree in Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with a minimum of three or more years of research experience; four to six years in a similar, professional technical position; and experience with Epic electronic medical record for screening patients for eligibility into studies.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Expertise in cell line manipulation (isolation, culture, pharmacological manipulation including clone transfection) and demonstrated experience with gene expression and cloning, protein-protein interaction, cell calcium imaging, and cardiomyocytes excitation-contraction analysis.
