Job Summary

The Department of History is seeking a Student Research Intern for the Spring 2025 semester. The Student Research Intern will assist the Professor on the project Beyond Resistance in the Black History of the Early American Republic: Joy, Pleasure, and Survival. This examination of free and enslaved Black Americans in the early American nation uses novel historical research, existing scholarly literature, and theory to understand Black Americans struggles against institutional and interpersonal racism in the contexts of both slavery and legal freedom. The project will use published and manuscript primary sources to examine joy and pleasure in spaces at the literal crossroads of the early republic: the public spaces where the new nations leaders gathered for patriotic, sociable, and partisan events. In the 1790s, these events were designed to generate hegemonizing expressions of political harmony. In the early nineteenth century, these events became opportunities to acknowledge divisions among white men and elide the presence or even the existence of other Americans.

  • Survey Secondary Literature
  • Compile and annotate bibliographies
  • Explore primary source materials
  • Develop note-taking and analytical skills
  • Engage with digital primary source databases
  • Learn research methodologies

This experience will not only enhance their academic skillset but also prepare them for future research or professional opportunities by building transferable skills in critical thinking, digital literacy, collaboration, and effective communication.

Minimum Qualifications

Open to Humanities majors only (Art, Art History, English, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Modern Languages, etc.)

  • Requires prior completion of FIU Service Excellence training or completion within first 30 days.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Proficiency of Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently as needed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally, and in writing.
  • Possess a high sense of responsibility.
  • Possess a high degree of organizational and time-management skills.
  • Posses knowledge of Mailchimp.
  • Skilled in content creation for social media including Instagram, Instagram Reels, and others.
  • Detail oriented with great organization skills/Ability to work accurately with detailed information.
  • Conduct quality control of digital assets.
  • Support metadata efforts and content of program records and archives.
  • Confidentiality -Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information
  • A passion for education.

Applicants must be currently enrolled at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student.

During the Summer semester, students need only to remain enrolled, but cannot graduate.

Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.

Work Schedule

  • Flexible
  • One semester only
  • 10 - 12 hours a week (not to exceed 144 hours per semester).
Advertised Salary

$18.00 per hour
