SALARY

$35.676 - $50.965

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs advanced level engineering work of considerable complexity involving the application of comprehensive and diversified structural engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments. Coordinates complex structural projects from budgeting and design through construction.

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Provides structural design and analysis of elevated structures, bridges, buildings and related facilities.
  • Prepares detailed sketches, drawings, cost estimates, specifications and technical reports by applying engineering principles and techniques.
  • Conducts field investigations, inspections and tests relative to structural design projects checking for completeness, accuracy and compliance with appropriate standards.
  • Meets with various municipal agencies, utility companies, consultants and contractors and various levels of Authority personnel to discuss various activities involving structural matters.
  • Updates the RIMS database system to reflect existing conditions.
  • Prepares and maintains records of current and future projects and maintains an accurate log of budgetary analysis, work schedules and status reports.
  • Coordinates and reviews the work of subordinate engineers.
  • Resolves technical problems and assists lower level engineers in trouble-shooting software problems and internet communications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Designing structures for maximum useful life to limit the disruption to our passengers.
  • Keeping abreast of changes in scientific knowledge and engineering technology and utilizing changes in solving theoretical or practical structural engineering problems.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS



  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a Structural Engineering concentration or a related field plus five (5) years of experience related to this position, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, provided the degree requirement is met. Must be a Registered Illinois Professional Engineer or Registered Illinois Structural Engineer.
  • Design experience in lieu of P.E. or S.E. Registration will be considered.
  • Valid State of Illinois Driver's License.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS



  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer key boards.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Ability to walk track on elevated structures, in subway tunnels and at grade conditions, after proper safety training.
  • Ability to operate an aerial lift, after proper safety training.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES



  • Detailed knowledge of structural engineering principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Detailed knowledge of materials, techniques, and municipal codes and ordinances as applied to design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure and facilities projects.
  • Detailed knowledge of municipal codes and ordinances as applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, track structures, and facilities.
  • Advanced skill using AutoCAD to create drawings for permitting.
  • Strong research, attention to detail, and problem solving skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good critical thinking skills to assess how one change can affect the entire project.
  • Advanced skill using personal computer, engineering applications, and data management software.
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to apply engineering knowledge to complex structural engineering problems with versatility, judgment, and perception.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate complex structural engineering problems and provide practical and cost effective solutions.
  • Ability to adapt well to change.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to manage moderately complex engineering projects.


WORKING CONDITIONS



  • General office environment.
  • Works outdoors, in or near shop/garage/terminal areas and on elevated or ballasted track areas adjacent to energized contact rails and moving trains.
  • Travels within the Chicago Metropolitan area and works various days and hours as assigned.
  • Subject to prevailing weather when traveling to field locations.
  • Occasionally required to travel to other locations in North America.


EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED



  • Standard office equipment.
  • Personal computer and related software, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Database, Auto Cad. Staad-Pro Structural Analysis & Design Software. National, State and Local Codes.
