Under the direction of a supervisor and/or manager, the Patient Access Coordinator coordinates Patient Access team members and processes to ensure a uniquely positive patient experience, while meeting the clinical and financial needs of the organization. This role functions as a subject matter expert in core Patient Access Functions, i.e. scheduling, registration, financial clearance and counseling, reception, check-in for appointments and/or procedures, and patient balance collections.

The Patient Access Coordinator assists with problem resolution, training, mentoring other team members, and filling in when the team is not fully staffed. This role performs all aspects of the Patient Access Rep position as needed.

Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of one (1) year of previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting.
Strong customer service skills and patient/customer centered focus in positive manner in all situations.

Experience PREFERRED:
Experience with health insurance, HMO, managed care, electronic medical billing/registration system, and appointment scheduling.

Education/training REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent

Education/training PREFERRED:
Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or closely related field from an accredited program

Independent action(s) required:
Performs daily activities with minimal supervision.
Functions in a self-directed manner to accomplish routine activities.
Notifies management, immediately, of issues involving violation of VCUHS policies or procedures.
Job duties may include the access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):
Provides training, mentorship, and on boards new members of the team.
Coordinates daily work assignments
Develops work and break schedules
Functions in a supervisory capacity, based on assigned area, or in the absence of the Supervisor.

Additional position requirements:
Depending on the assigned area, may be required to work off-shifts and/or weekend and holidays.
May be considered part of essential staffing, depending on the assigned area.
